Went out to the funshow today, and my dad went along, told him about how I was looking for a Yugo underfolder. Well we didn't see any at the show, but there was a big shop up in PA another hour up the interstate, so we went to look. Ended up seeing this gem on the wall, and I decided to take it home, I did the paperwork, and dad decided he would be Santa Clause, and he said "Merry Christmas", and paid for it for me I kinda hinted that he could buy it for me for Christmas, but he surprised me none the less

(cat wasn't included)

Anyways, she looks great! I always wanted a quality underfolder to go along with my wasr, and now I have one. Now, next step is to get a cleaning rod, some wood handgaurds, and a proper sling, and some paracord for the butt stock.

I'll get the wood at apex, and the cleaning rod probably from Numrich, but where would i get a sling? Also, I know that damn 922r law is a pain when changing things, does putting wood on it affect the US parts count?

You can get a Yugo sling from Numrich as well, here. The two I got from them were in great shape and cleaned up nicely.

You currently have at least seven, probably eight compliance parts:

Receiver = 1
Barrel = 1
FCG = 3
Pistol Grip = 1
Handguards = 1
Slant Brake = 1 (if Century marked with a "C")

You need six to be compliant, so you have some room to work there.

oh why did they coat the mag and receiver in that horrible finish. blast that all off and blue it properly
yes get the wood for it, that plastic looks awful

if you need more 922 parts just keep a usa mag around in the weapon when not in use.

I made my m70 from a parts kit and cold blued it, turned out great

you can easily steel wool most of the finish off and cold blue it, use the paste type it really sticks on and darkens it fast
do all the numbers match? is the barrel chrome, mine wasnt

Mag is not coated, just looks like it.

Finish will do fine for what i want.

numbers don't look to match, I think century is having trouble getting kits now so....

Barrel is a US made one, and not sure, but don't think so....

What finish would these have come with from the factory? For some reason I thought I remembered hearing they were parked.

from what I could tell in pics they looked blued
here is mine, now because of the low light the camera put a blue tint on the picture, so its not that weird blue color, its black but has worn down some from using it.

I think it looks better that that scratchy gray park finish they use, everything I get century made gets steel wool and re blued.

Here is a new one from century. Only because its still new I just used steel wool and reblued. One day I will media blast to get rid of all the park and reblue on a nice slick receiver. Just need to make sure everything works out incase I need to send it back

You can see how nice and dark it turned out, it will wear with use but that also makes it look nicer

I think the original guns were parked, but thing is with the century guns, they are US receivers and barrels, and used yugo parts to make a "new"ak. I know it's not absolutely correct, ain't gonna get it like that unless you build it yourself, and some don't have the time or capabilities to build one....

The state of things now, I expect this is what you will see as parts kits dry up.... Not that it's bad, it's not, as long as it works and goes bang I'm ok with it...

well its good you got a nice barrel, mine is very close to failing the bullet test. But it seems to shoot straight I can hit clays at 100 yards with 1-2 shots.
I would buy one from century if I ever get the chance. I just happened to get my kit by chance, I was getting a romy g but the seller died on me the very next day, so I picked this up locally from some guy only because I was getting parts together to build one. He was going to make it into a pistol, so I saved it from that.

Zastava uses hot bluing. They also use rivets...

Interesting, looks like my M70 might be sporting a new finish soon. I always like bluing better anyway.

The original Zastava finish was defenetly a bluing. Virtually all US made copies don't replicate the blued finish when it comes to AK's. The receiver looks to be 1mm sadly. I think Century is cutting corners.

Really i think it's a matter of increased cost, and lack of parts to build from now. Thick receivers cost more, and continuing to use them would drive prices too high for century to sell competitively, plus the lack of parts to build on now, of course means higher prices for those parts. This is all IMO of course. Honestly i don't care. It will serve me just as well as it may have served a soldier in the past, it functions, and is half way accurate is all I care about.

They're not necessarily cutting corners if they are building up AB1 kits since those originally had 1mm receivers from the factory.

I have a couple new leather slings Jnk, just shoot me a IM if you want one. After all the fun I have at your expense on WSUB, I figure I owe you a favor.

yeah, they don't have the thicker trunnions either, so the AB1 idea may be correct. I don't know much on AK's per say just the basics Most AB2's I have seen have the thicker trunnions on them though....

I didn't know the Yugo's ever made 1mm recievers? Do you got any pics of an original?

You can buy original kits from Apex here. They have some decent pics of the demilled receiver in the link.

That is quite interesting. They also appear to have the standard thin AKM barrel profile. So let get this straight the Yugo's made only a very small handfull of 1mm receiver AK's before switching to the heavier 1.5mm? I wonder why the barrels always look like sewer pipes on Yugo surplus barrels.

Liquidmetal  [Team Member]

Right, the 1mm models predate the 1.6mm rifles. Don't know exactly how many were made, but their numbers are small compared to the 1.6mm rifles.

So I'm assuming Century ran out of the thicker kits, and found some of the older thinner kits, and started building from those, with the proper receivers. Makes sense I suppose, Century can only use what they can get a hold of. The kits they have now may not have been complete, may have been just parts, and maybe is why the numbers don't match?

My slabside took a standard yugo barrel. I used KVAR's Bulgarian "classic" barrel which is AK profile, and all parts fit with little modification, except the handguard retainer journal, that area is obviously in a different place on a Bulgy barrel. I had to add a little material there.

Surplus yugo barrels look like sewer pipes because, contrary to popular belief, chrome-lining does matter. There are too many of those barrels that look like crap to come to any other conclusion.

Also I forgot to add the barrel on my new AB2T looks to be a new US made barrel, but it is not chrome lined. Actually looks like the whole thing inside and out was parked as the chamber is black to May have to polish that chamber up some?

Many of these rifles were used in the Yugo civil war in the early 90's. From what I have read, the barrels were rarely, if ever, cleaned. So, you have the combination of corrosive ammo, no cleaning, and no chrome lining. The reason they were not chrome lined is because Yugoslavia had no natural sources for chromium, and even though they were a Warsaw pact country, they werent exactly friendly with the soviets, and didnt want to depend on them for thier weapons-making materials.

The lack of chromium in Yugoslavia is an internet perpetuated myth. Zastava simply chose not to chrome the bores of M70s, just like they chose to chrome the bores of M85s, M90/95s, and M21s.

Yugoslavia was never part of the Warsaw Pact.

This is true, Yugoslavia was a state of it's own, that kinda used the best of both worlds. Being they got stuff from the Russians and UN, but I believe all of their weapons were made in country.... Just what i have heard, was before my time

I stand corrected. Yugoslavia was a communist nation, but not a member of the warsaw pact. But, all the info I could find on the subject states that Yugoslavia does not have any natural sources of chromium. When they did get it, they got it from Russia. As for the M85 and M90/95's, they werent produced in large numbers. The political and economic situation there now has changed drasticly since the cold-war days, so they probably have no problem now getting chromium to chrome-line the barrels of current-production M21's.

They do have chromium deposits from what I read from a bit of google searching. The mountain terrains of kosovo are rich with minerals.

The Yugoslavian army did not see chrome-lined bores as a military requirement.

The "no chromium in Yugoslavia" as to why M70s aren't chrome-lined has been erroneously posted so many times on the internet it has started to become accepted as fact.

You very well could be correct. There isnt much info on the subject, and I was just repeating what I have read.
