I've had this '51 Russian for about 15 years. I finally took it shooting a couple of months ago. I noticed that the bayo doesn't completely fold into the slot in the stock. It droops down low enough for the tip of the bayo to show. What gives?
Could it be the spring is worn or do I have the wrong bayo? All the numbers match on the rifle.
I read another thread about a member's newly acquired '52 and there was mention of different lugs and collars?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Ray
The '51 will have a straight-eared lug and collar, like this:
This is a slanted-eared lug and collar:
If you have a slanted collar on a straight ear, the bayo will droop. Also, if you have the bayo on upside down, it will droop. The narrow edge folds upward and the wide edge is exposed downward.
If you are in need of a straight-eared collar, then I will say, "Good luck." The last ones that I saw on Gunbroker and ebay went for big bucks, $50-60. You can also weld in some material, grind it square, and re-blue.
Well,it appears that I have the slanted collar on a straight lug. I kind of thought that was the case from looking at it. I guess I just needed an informed opinion.
Thank you very much. I guess I'll just have to hit the gunshows and try to get lucky.
How hard is it to remove the bayo for the time being? I have the screw type with the other side being staked.

Just make sure you use a QUALITY screwdriver on a solid surface. Apply medium counterclockwise pressure and tap the screwdriver with a hammer. Then apply clockwise (yes, tighten it!) and do the same with the hammer. Alternate lefty-loosey/righty-tighty until the stakes are broken, then carefully remove. If you feel binding, tighten again before loosening all the way.
You'll get it out just fine.
Cool, might try it tonight. Would it be possible to just unscrew it and then insert punch to punch out the sleeve? I'm thinking with the right sized punch I won't damage the threads in the sleeve, although I might damage the threads on the bayo.
I'm gonna look at it when I get home.

There are no threads on the bayo. The sleeve (collar) is under spring tension slides right off.
