 Should I modifiy it?

I have a russian SKS that has been bastardised by its previous owner, bayonet has been ground off and the recciver drilled for a scope mount.

The mount makes using stripper clips impossible. I have a cheap redot mounted on it atm as far back as possible and it looks like if i were to cut the mount it would allow me to use stripper clips.
This is the only rrifle I have besides a original Long branch (303 lee enfield) and an Ak47 type rifle.

I have considered putting a magnified optic on it which would make it good for hunting but would require me to leave the mount as is.

What should I do? cut the mount or get a magnified optic on it?

You could get another receiver cover. Since the gun has already been modified I wouldn't feel bad making changes.

This.

If someone else already screwed with it, you can try to set it back to original, but those holes in the receiver are undoable. Can't un-ring that bell.

I thought the recciver mounts didn't hold a good zero?

but it does sound like a good idea

Receiver COVER mounts don't hold zero, because, well, the receiver cover MOVES. It COMES OFF.

The receiver itself is permanently fixed to the barrel, so it should never move. Something securely bolted to it should never move as well, thus a scope mounted on a rail bolted to the receiver should hold zero.
