I just picked this up from a gun show yesterday. I feel bad that i paid to much for it.

It is a Norinco Sporter. I paid $300. After reading all last night, all the threads say that Norinco is junk but Norinco and Polytech AK's are closes to the best ones out there.

I 'm confused.

You did fairly well..... that's a SKS Model D or M. I always get them confused. But that's the SKS that's built from tbe ground up to use Ak-47 series magazines. They usually go for $500+ in my area.

That is an SKS-M Sporter. Though $300 is not an outrageous "steal", it is a great price nonetheless. Most are going from $375 to $500.

The skinny on these is that they like Chinese AK mags, but I have found that Bulgarian mags are also favorable to the gun with a little filing around the front latch point.

"How'd I do", you ask? Ya done did fine.

I shot the gun and it shoots great. I was using eastern bloc (with the rib) 30 round mags and they functioned perfectly. It is accurate as all can be too. I forgot to mention that I got the cleaning tube kit, sling, extra 30 round mag, manual, front sight adjuster tool and empty green plastic bottle.

Another question?

On my other Norincos, there are matching serial numbers on all the parts. On this one, there are only numbers on the receiver, carrier, bolt and electro stenciled on the gas tube. All matching but no numbers on the stock, the receiver cover and the trigger guard. Is this normal?

Plus, there are no Factory stamps like 66 or 396 to tell what plant it is from...

None of them came with numbers on the cover, stock or trigger guard. These were commercially built for export to the US. There should be a number preceding your serial, like 89-1234XX or 92-1234XX. Those are believed to be the year of manufacture.

I have shot it and it functions fine, the Iron sights are zeroed and I broke it down and cleaned it. Now it is going into the back of the safe for long term storage. What protective coating should I put on it? I am looking for something not to smelly or should i not worry about it. IE Climate controlled Safe.

I have 2 just like it, They are my favorite type of SKS I paid more than $300 for each of mine and don't regret it.

As far as long term Storage goes, CLP Collector is made for long term storage.
