New to me Norinco Paratrooper
Guys:
Came across this beauty at a small town gunshop I discovered this past Sunday. It's a Norinco made for commercial export, so no arsenal mark. Wood is in primo condition. Bluing is 95%. All matching numbers. This is stamped on the left side of the receiver:
MOD SKSS 7,62x39MM C&A, VA BH VA (YES, THERE'S A SECOND "S" AFTER "SKS")
MADE IN CHINA BY NORINCO
SERIAL: 92 05 88x (as marked on the left side of the receiver, everywhere else is marked 0588x)
There are no markings on the receiver cover.
Does "BH" possibly stand for Belle Haven, Virginia? Any idea as to the year of manufacture?
Oh, yeah, I paid $174.03 out the door

You have an SKSS. Shorter gas tube. Commercial variant. Likely '92.
Didn't I already answer this one on another forum?
You may well have. I asked at one other forum. Just wanted a second opinion/confirmation. You've never asked for a second opinion???

Quite alright, AV.
So I'll step aside. Is there an SKS Doctor in the house? Second opinion needed.
I cant help with the ID, but you stole that thing at $175!
Nice find.

Nice find.
God was smiling on you! Now.... range report!!!!
Touched up the bluing on the receiver with Super Blue. Sanded off the nasty Chinese orange coating from the stock. Stained with Minwax "Sedona Red", oiled with Danish Oil - Natural. She's a beauty. Stock is still drying. Danish Oil is still a little tacky. Ordered a couple replacement buttplate screws from Gunbroker. Will post pix when she's all together.

Looks a little like mine. Got it for $69 a LONG LONG time ago.

Nice grain in the stock.

The difference is only in the gas system on the one in the OP. It is a regular Paratrooper. But the SKSS can also found in the sporter and SKS-M versions. These actually have been fitted with barrels that have a different gas port position, and hence the shorter gas tube/piston are needed. I borrowed some pics from Beachbumwithagun of SKS boards to show some of the highlights. The "space" that is shown between the rear of the bayo lug and the gas block on the SKSS is not present on a regular cut down paratrooper.
thanks for the info martin. what was the purpose of the shorter gas tube?

It was not so much that the length of the tube was thought to be needed for alteration (stroke distance = same as standard SKS), as it was the gas pressure that developed after the bullet passed by the gas port. The further rearward that the port is drilled, the more gas pressure can build up for reliable cycling of the piston/operating rod/bolt combination.
But when it was evident that a normal cut-down barrel did not impede cycling, the later paratroopers simply used the existing gas port and standard length tube.
makes sense. thanks again martin.
So, martin, what you are saying is "never damage your SKSS gas tube because if you do you aren't going to get a replacement without cutting down a standard sks gas tube" That sucks. Oh, well, guess I'll refrain from using my gas tube as a hammer.

You do have one advantage, AV. If you damage your tube, you can always cut down a standard length tube and piston to fit. You just can't go the other way and stretch yours to fit a regular SKS!
And I had a bit of a windfall on a short tube gun last night, myself. A local classified had this baby advertised for $280. I talked him into selling for $260 (no transfer or FFL fees!) and made a two hour drive. It was definitely worth the money, time and gas.

Where'd you find that? I've been looking for a paratrooper to add to the SKS collection.
A little gunshop in Pardeeville (north of Madison about 35 miles on Hwy 22). It's on mainstreet next to the barber shop.

Awesome find :) I can't say I'm a fan of that stock, but it takes AK mags, which addresses the main beef people have with the SKS.

How comfortable is that thing to hold? The foregrip I mean.

Might have to check it out the next time I'm in the area. My old man lives in Portage.

Extremely comfortable for me to handle, shoulder and fire. But I'm in the 50% that can say that. The other half don't like them at all. I would suggest trying one before buying one.

nice buy.
I have a /26/ para and a skss para (with shorter gas piston) both are great, the skss seems to me, to have much less recoil to the shoulder.
I just scored one.....pics will be up as soon as I get time. Marked SKSS also.
AIRBORNE!!!!!
Are all the SKSS model bayonetes attached with rivets? Mine is riveted and not screwed.
AIRBORNE!!!!!
Any idea how many SKS models have riveted bayonetes?
I have a SKS D and a SKSS Para with rivets and a Russian and another Chinese Para with screws.
AIRBORNE!!!!!
I passed on a really nice paratrooper a while back because I thought the price was too high. I've been kicking myself ever since. I got lucky on monday and bought one that had been bubba'ed all to hell(goofy plastic stock, 4-16x40 AO Tasco, rusty). I just finished cleaning most of it up and it doesn't appear to have been shot much(or ever cleaned). Mine has the standard gas tube length.
Contemplating buying another standard model(blade bayonet) and an Ithaca M37 16 gauge tomorrow.
Just curious about something, I have a Norinco SKS M paratrooper(uses AK mags, bayo lug completely cut off , etc..). Does all of the SKS paratrooper models have the shorter gas port and piston rod or is it just the ones designated as SKSS? I ask because I plan on replacing my upper guard soon with a tapco Intrafuse cover(I have the stock already) and in case I mess this sucker up trying to drive that damn pin out to remove the cover, I need to know which length port Ill need to look for. BTW< I saw the picture comparing the 3 different ones but Im really not sure which one I have. Can anyone elaborate on this, thanks!

These are my favorite types of SKS .

(Well maby a 1949 Tula Russian)
I just picked up an SKS M paratrooper that takes AK mags tonight. I got two 30 round mags and a box of ammo with it for $275 out the door. It had a crappy AK74 style bolt on muzzle device that I promptly took off as soon as I got it home. I never really thought about an SKS before I saw this one and I thought that I would get it for a knock around truck/brush gun. I like that it can take the mags.
I will try to post pics later. I won't get it out to the range until August when I get done with the current deployment. Something to look forward to I guess!
