SKS-D mag ?
Im going to pick up an SKS-D this afternoon. Ive heard they can tricky on which mags they like but 100% reliable with the right ones. Anyone have reccomendations on which metal mags I should try?
Ive also heard foks say these guns arent as good as an AK47. Any opinions as to why that may be?
I had one for years, the only mags I couldn't fit were the tapco mags. Also, drums do not fit. You are going to love that gun! There awesome...
Chinese mags work best. But I also have good luck with Bulgy mags. Tapcos can be made to fit, but not worth the effort.
AK vs. SKS-D? The SKS is a better platform for accuracy and sight picture retention. The AK is lighter, more maneuverable. Fit either one to your needs.
+1 to the above, Chinese mags seem to fit/work the best, but I have also had good luck with Hungarian 20rd mags. Also they may be picky on what type of ammo they will feed, mine seem to feed better with FMJ than HP.
As far as a SHTF/Combat rifle, the AK is lighter, faster to reload, and I think a little more ergonomic. The SKS is normally a little more accurate, slower to reload, and with a standard style stock without pistol grip, less ergonomic.
I do not have a D or M, but 2 Sporters and I love them.
Could it not be argued that the accuracy of the SKS (D) is only good for the 1st few rounds, when you factor the skinny barrel will heat up fast?
The SKS is a rather rugged design. If I did not have any other rifle but an SKS, I have confidence in it even if it is a farcry from being high-tech and modern. It is not called a poormans's rifle for nothing.
But relavently speaking, it is not as legendary as the "AK reliability". I won't bother getting in a long winded discussion on the comparisons and contrasts but it is naive to say it is as good.
You might want to contact these guys, they had a box full of Chinese mags.....

I had 100% success using any steel mag I put in my SKS "M". Never had a mag that wouldn't work get inserted into it.
mind if I ask what you payed for the rifle? pics? Just curious, mildly toying with the idea of selling mine.

They go for $10 or less up in "The County".
That way, I can afford the gas to drive up from Augusta to buy it.
Seriously, savage_winchester, the going rate for these are $350 to $600 with no rhyme nor reason why some sell so cheaply and others go so high. $500 would be more than a reasonable price to ask for a D.
And, then again, I just bought one of its cousins (SKS-M) on Gunbroker this morning for $279. Go figure.

How do you tell the difference between a D and M?

Whoa, Man you were at the right place at the right time. You know the seller just KNOWS he sold it WAY too cheap....and he'd be right. Congrats! I have 2 "D"s, an early and a late one. Love those guns. Other than wishing they had screw-in heavy barrel, they're about perfect. A little trickly to change mags until you learn how though.

It does take some practice to get the mags in. Taking them out is a cinch!
Here's a video showing the SKS-M, an AK-47, and another SKS that was converted to accept Tapco mags with the duckbills lopped off. My technique isn't great, but it does show that I've had to practice a bit for the SKS-M mag insertions, they are tricky to find the exact angle.

And the seller could have put that new SKS-M up for $379 and got it easily... I'm glad he left the $100 on my table!
