I originally made this post for SKS Boards, but I know that there are
many here on AR15.COM who appreciate a live fire review. So.....
THE TEST
I recently had a chance to take part in some live fire demonstration
videos with Gibson_GM, utilizing the 7.62 X 39 cartridge with four
distinctly different platforms.
1. AK-M, a WASR-10/63 standard function AK47 carbine.
2. SKS-M, a factory altered commercial SKS that accepts AK mags.
3. Standard SKS, modified to accept
Duck-bill-less Tapco 20
round mags, and employing the
Scythian Extended Magazine Release
and an
Ultra Modified Drop-Free bolt.
4. Standard SKS with no modificatons, using stripper clips.
Each of the three detachable mag models were subject to three magazine
depletions with two swaps on the fly. Three sets of stripper clips were
used in the standard SKS. All were shot with
controlled aim for
the purpose of demonstrating
versatility of reloading in
sustained cover/offensive/defensive fire situations.
PURPOSE
No other reason except that it was possible to accomplish such a feat
with the firearms at my disposal on that day. Oh, and I had a good
time.
The video demonstrations will allow the viewer to observe the function
of all four platforms and draw conclusions based on live-fire
performance. No preferences or recommendations were made during the
filming of the videos, though I may express an opinion or two later on
in this thread.
Now it is time to enter the
Disclaimer:
Firearms can be dangerous if not used properly by
the operator. All modifications performed to any firearm are done at
the sole risk of the owner. Practice common sense, safe procedures,
control, and respect for others when shooting.
That being said, I have experienced no ill effects from the
modifications I made to my firearm in over 600 rounds. Gibson_GM is
taller than me. And no creatures larger than horse-flies were injured
during filming this important and historical event.
THE VIDEO
Here are the videos shot on my home range on June 13, 2010. Again,
there are no recommendations. It is up to the viewer to draw
conclusions.

NOTES:
A. I modified my own standard SKS to accept the Duck-bill-less Tapco 20
mags, but there is a ready made adapter that can be bought and easily
installed to modify any standard SKS to accept quick-change detachable
modified Tapco mags. Get this technology here -
www.thesksmagadapter.com
B. The extended mag release can also be installed on any standard SKS,
and can be acquired here -
http://www.thebumpband.com/
C. The Ultra Modified Drop-Free Bolt instructions will be covered later
in the post.
D. If you own a standard SKS, it is assumed you already know about
stripper clips.
E. The AK and SKS-M take AK mags, and AK mags don't fit into standard
SKS's without radical and expensive alterations. Again, AK mags won't
work in a standard SKS. OK? OK. (and AK mags won't go into a
standard SKS, either)
HISORY
The development of the Duck-bill-less has been covered quite well in the
Sticky Threads and earlier topics found in the
The Marcus Magazine
Adapter section of
Survivor's SKS Boards.
http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php?board=65.0
Marcus' SKSMagadapter is very a well refined accessory with high
reliability.
This is my Tapco 20 round SKS mag with the duckbill lopped off.
Special mention here goes to
Lollygagger for helping me build my
own Duck-bill-less.

.... and to
Galahad
who administers the Survivor's SKS Boards forum and allows me to post
stuff like this without banning me! (yet  )
There are may other players who were integral in bringing all this
combination of technologies to the forefront and making them into a
working reality. These good folks can be found with their contributions
and satisfied remarks in the threads of the Marcus Magazine Adapter
section.
Lollygagger, Marcus and myself also worked out the kinks of what I like
to call the
Ultra Modified Drop-Free Bolt that allows the
Duck-bill-less Tapco detachable mags to be better inserted freely onto a
closed SKS bolt. This thread explains the process and reasoning.

Here are some pics of my Ultra Modified Drop-Free Bolt.
This is Flyingmonkey's and Prince50's brainchild, the Scythian Extended
Mag Release which enhances the detachable SKS mag experience to the nth
degree. It works really well.
CONCLUSION
Here is where I have an opinion.
I really like my Duck-bill-less a lot. And I have fun with all guns on
the 7.62 X 39 platform. I eat too many chocolate doughnuts.
In my personal test, the total time elapsed from charging the handle to
the last controlled round fired was:
25 seconds for the AK
22 seconds for the SKS-M
18 seconds for the Standard SKS with Duck-bill-less
Gibson's outings took 23 seconds for the Duck-bill-less and 25 seconds
for the stripper clips.
And finally, Gibson_GM is a great video producer and much taller than me
(still!). Thanks Gib, for your hard work on this.
As readers, viewers and enthusiasts, your own conclusions and opinions
are more than welcome.
Always shoot safely. Have fun.
