I have the yugo sks with bayonet and gernade launcher. I think i heard some where about laws restricting the modification of them. I was thinking of getting another stock for it becouse i had how the factory stock really doesent have alot for your fireing hand to grip onto, i like the more modarn stock rifle grip. So does anyone know the rules? Thank you.

If you replace the stock with a pistol grip stock, you must comply with 18 USC 922(r) which limits the number of counable fireign made parts to 10.
Modifying the rifle will cause it to lose C&R status, which may mean that the bayonet should be removed.

The same goes for AKs too right? I have a romainan wars10 ak.

So, as long as i only have 10 or less forien parts? Becoause i know they make alot of american parts like pistons and what not.

Also, what is the C&R status?

C&R stands for Curio and Relic. This generally applies to guns that are 50 years old or more. How the Yugo, which is no more than 45 years old, got this standing is a mystery to me! But it does legally qualify as a C&R in its original configuration.

The Yugo has 15 foriegn parts, compared to 14 on other SKS's. Here's a good link to browse if you want to play the 10 or less game by altering your gun.

And you need the C&R becouse of the gernade launcher muzzle attachment? Would it be considered a destructive device other wise?

The rifle came in with an attached bayonet due to it's C&R status. Non C&R rifles cannot be imported with an attached bayonet.
The attached grenade launcher may only be permitted on C&R rifles as well, but that's not clear to me.
The launching attachment is not a destructive device. Live (explosive) grenades are DDs.

18USC prohibits the assembly of ANY semiautomatic rifle in a configuration which is prohibited from importation using more than ten of the specified foreign parts.
If Century converted your WASR to accept standard AK magazines, it complies with the law unless someone modified it after Century sold it.

Yugo M59's are classified as "Curios and Relics" under the "of significant historical value" provision - same with CZ82's and some others. Basically, a firearms historian affilliated with a museum stated that they were examples of the weaponry used by our adversaries during the cold war, or somesuch.

Anyway, that classification has a condition attached - the rifle MUST stay in it's "original configuration". After all, it is a museum/collector piece, and valuable due to it's historic authenticity. So, if you do ANYTHING to the weapon that "modifies" it - remove parts, etc. - it loses it's status as a Curio/Relic. So what you now have is a plain old foreign made "assault rifle", and 922r applies.

My advise? If you don't like shooting it, sell it. I think Tapco makes a 922r compliance kit for the Yugo SKS's, but by the time you spend the $150 you'll have...an SKS with a bunch of black plastic furniture.

Sounds good, thanks for all the feedback. I mostly got my sks more for collecting anyway, though it shoots good, I'd always choose my AK or AR first. Thanks again.

As some stated, if you put a pistol grip stock or a high cap mag on you will have to comply with 922r compliance. As stated since it is a Yugo it has 15 compliance parts so you will have to change out at least 5 parts to USA made parts.... Also be advised that if you do decide to change out one of the above then you will also have to remove the grenade launcher and night sights....

This will not longer be eligible as a C&R unless you put back to it's original configuration..... This means if you decide to sell one day you have to ship to a FFL01 holder.........
