Father-in-law gave me a yugo sks 59/66 and I haven't a clue about them. Couple Q's:
Does it need stripper clips and can I change it to accept a removable magazine?
He said that he thought it was illegal to alter it to accept mags.
Is the barrel chrome lined?
Any parts I need to give extra attention to that go bad?
Would it be a good idea to replace the stock with something more modern?
Do they need to stay well lubed like an AR?
Anything else I should know?
Could do the google thing but asking y'all is more fun, thanks.

Any parts I need to give extra attention to that go bad?No SKS parts will out last you.
Would it be a good idea to replace the stock with something more modern? Enjoy what you have
Do they need to stay well lubed like an AR? Just lubed enough to run, not dripping
Anything else I should know? Get lots of ammo and enjoy

You can use stipper clips, but you don't have to. The worst two things you can do to an SKS, are modify it to accept hi-cap mags, or put a Tapco stock on it. An SKS makes a poor AK.

Make sure the firing pin channel is clean. If it has cosmoline or other crud in it, it could cause the firing pin to stick, and cause a slam fire. The firing pin should move freely, and run dry. No lube in the channel.

sksboards.com has a plethora of info. Check it out.

I bought a Chinese made SKS in '87 or '88. I bought spares of the parts I thought might fail. All those parts are still sealed up in the plastic they were shipped in.
If it makes you feel better, buy a firing pin, an extractor and the springs.

Do they need Strippers (No) Can you put a hi-cap or detachable mag on? (Yes). But it will have to comply with BATFE 922r rules. A Yugo consists of 15 imported parts, in order to put a pistol grip stock or a detachable mag on you will have to replace a minimum of 5 parts out of the 15.... Now if you do decide to go this route you will also have to remove more evil features from the Yugo SKS, 1) the night sights and 2) the grenade launcher...

Parts are:

1. Receiver.
2. Barrel.
3. Muzzle attachment.
4. Bolt.
5. Bolt carrier.
6. Gas piston.
7. Trigger housing.
8. Trigger.
9. Hammer.
10. Sear.
11. Disconnector.
12. Buttstock.
13. Forearm/handguard.
14. Magazine body.
15. Follower.

The parts scratched out do not exist so these are un-replaceable.... So you can choose 5 out of the rest of the list and be legal.......
