Steyr Maadi pricecheck
What have Steyr Maadi's been selling for in the past 6 months? Anyone know how many of these were imported total?
I can tell you that my brother just bought a NIB Steyr Maadi, with a 3 digit S/N, one original Egyptian marked mag for $1600. I got mine with the original bayonet and 2 original Egyptian marked mags for $1200 a few years ago. Closest you'll ever get to a true Russian AKM....as the Russians built a factory in Egypt with Russian techs to help the Egyptians manufacture AKs. Their Maadis were made on Russian tooling, etc. Only 2000 were imported by Steyr in Secaucus, NJ. Some Steyr Maadis were modified used in the movie Red Dawn since they resembled a Russian AKM and were sold afterwards for big bucks. Check the Maadi forum at the AK47Net for more on the Steyr. Make sure the serial number is under 2000...should read something like S001579.
If you look hard enough you'll find a few out there for sale. Good luck.

Are you looking for a Steyr solely for collection purposes? If not, you could pick up a post-ban Maadi ARM for about $400 or maybe less. In the post-ban Maadis, I suggest the ARM since it came with a threaded muzzle under a spot welded muzzle cap. I bought a ARM back in 1994 for about $250 and recently converted it into the "pre-ban" look. I added new soviet "type" furniture from Z-Recto, refinished the rifle in semi-gloss Moly Resin, G2 FCG and added a slant muzzle brake. Here's some pics of the finished product...
Maadi ARM
Thanks guys. I figured it would be 1200-1400 range. I had no idea that the number imported was so low!
Tapeo1, that is one fine looking ARMs. I considered that route but I figured I would have more into it than what it would be worth.
Maadi ARM ~ $450 (shipped transfer, etc)
US compliance parts (RSA Trigger, gas piston, slant brake, pistol grip) ~ $160
Correct FSB and gas block ~ $40
Parts installation & refinish ~ $150
Laminated furniture ~ $150 Minimum with refinish
That would make one awsome post-ban ARM but the cost would be in the $950 neighborhood. I think a true preban would be worth a couple hundred more. Especially since a Stery Maadi would likley hold its value longer.
This all come to light when I started adding up the cost of my AK74 build. I have over $900 in it and I figure it would take some time re-selling it at $600.
Actually, my costs were quite a bit less than that but then again, I bought my ARM for about $250 back in '94. I had no need to correct the FSB and gas block on my Maadi. I think that problem is only on the Romanian AKs.
Maadi ARM - $250
G2 FCG - $35 (Easy to install yourself!)
US Gas Piston - $15
US Slant Brake - $15
Metal Refinish (did it myself) - $10 worth of Moly Resin
New Furniture including Pistol grip - $130 from Z-Recto
Total cost was about $455. Since ARMs now go for about $450, that would take the total cost up to about $655 or so.
$450 would be sweet indeed.
After thinking about it a little more, I would not need a new FSB. I would still want a new gas block though. Gotta have the bayonet lug ;) One can also save a lot when performing the work themselves. I could probably do the trigger install myself but I could not handle the refinishing, gas piston, or gas block installation. BTW, is the buttstock Egyptian? Upon first glance I thought it was Soviet.
Anyhow, it is still worth considering. Even though it is not cheap, it would still be easier than finding a Steyr at a fair price. It is all nothing but a dream anyhow. I need to put the SSR-85C up for sale first. Its a nice rifle in its own right, I would just rather have an AKM clone.
Edit to add
If I did sell my
SSR85C I would probably just re-use the furniture off of it on a possible AKM clone.

Damn, that sounds like a lot. I picked one up already converted with US furniture and FCG for $300 and recently sold it for $400. Got an RPM still for sale that's got US furniture and FCG (and the wrong muzzle brake) for $500

Refinishing was a piece of cake. All you need is a Sandblaster, air brush, a little Moly Resin and an oven. Here's a link on how to
Refinish and here's a link for
MolyResin. The stock is actually US made by
Ironwood Designs. The upper hanguard is actual Soviet and the lower is Egyptian. All the wood was refinished by Z-Recto who does an amazing job at recreating the reddish Soviet finish. He does not stain the wood but uses a colored varnish like the Soviets used. All the wood on the rifle came to $130 shipped from Z-Recto.
Oh, BTW, if you want to see something really sweet, check out what this guy Teadie did to his Maadi ARM... he turned it into a beautiful underfolder!!!
Maadi AKMS
Hey, I found a Steyr Maadi on Gunbroker... it ain't cheap though... starting bid is $2,100.
Steyr Maadi
Very cool. Thanks for posting it. Being an '82 and single digit serial is cool but in no means worth over $2K in my eyes.
I couldn't agree more! Heck, for that amount of money, you could probably get a pre-89 ban Galil.
