i recently purchased a maadi misr 90 from a pawnshop. i have heard a lot of derogatory things about them from the diehard ak people. they call them halfbreeds and frankensteins. the one i have has a better finish metalwise and furniture wise than any ak i've seen and i have been in the market for awhile. its quality surpasses any romanian or yugo i've seen. whats the problem with this gun?

There were several iterations of "Maadis" ranging from piss poor to pretty good. Sounds like you made a good buy. Pics!

I've never seen a post-ban Maadi with a better finish than a Romanian or a Yugo, being as the Romanians and Yugos are parkerized. Maadis have a thick coat of glossy black enamel sprayed on them, and every one I've ever dealt with had sand in the paint and it looked rough in some areas but smooth in others. However if yours isn't maybe you got lucky, or maybe someone refinished it.

I think that many of the "diehard ak people" take issue with the fact that these rifles were put together by the infamous Century Arms (not just imported by them) using Chinese MAK-90 parts and Egyptian AKM receivers. The Egyptian AKM receiver is a standard European AKM receiver, but the stamped Chinese AK rifles are not AKMs, they are more like "stamped AK-47s" with a unique Chinese twist. The resulting rifle usually works just fine, but is an odd collection of parts to those who are into "pattern correct" AK rifles. Also, Century Arms had to do a little Fittin' an Gunsmithin' to get these things put together, and they are not known to be the best craftsmen. Keep in mind also that the MISR90 came out when "kit builds" were not as common as they are today, and most AKs were factory built. These days, a MISR90 doesn't seem quite as odd anymore.

Great response, this is exactly right. From what I've been able to tell it is just a perception thing. I'd happily grab a MISR-90 if I could find one (currently I have a MISR-10 and a MISR-S/A).
