VEPR questions
I just got an e-mail from K-Var about the VEPR's they just got in, thought they looked interesting, but more as a base gun than as-is. I've got two Arsenals (SGL21-61 and SGL 31-61), so I don't feel like I really NEED another AK, but I'm kind of thinking one of the VEPR's could be cool if setup well. Can these be converted to a regular AK-style pistol grip config? Any real big downsides to the VEPR? Thanks in advance for help.
The only big downside I know of with the Vepr is they are very heavy. Besides falling in love with it when you get it and buying more Veprs. Seriously.
Also, don't let the cleaning solvent touch the finish. It is paint.
Another downside is the dent that it puts on your brass (caused by the dust cover during extraction). But that can be corrected with a $45 valmet port buffer.
Another downside is that after owning one you'll never be satisfied with anything else.
They cannot use a standard AK magazine.
I'm not sure if that can be changed but I
know VEPR uses a propriatory mag.

Wrong. The 7.62 and 5.45 use standard AK mags.
The new 7.62 Vepr's dont accept regular ak mags. I dont know about the 5.45
The RobArm Vepr take regular mags(RobArms did the conversion inhouse)

they will accept hi cap surplus mags providing you install a bullet guide and file down the mag catch. just got thru doing a 23" 7.62x39 for myself, keep in mind also that you need to follow 922 law with your parts count. basically same as the saiga's other than when you get into the furniture......things change a bit due to the thickness of the bbl and the slant cut receiver, parts little harder to find from that point on.
The 5.45 x 39 Vepr fed bullets in a dry fire test with standard AK74 mags the mag catch will need to be filed down. This will not work on the 762 x 39 version .

I was half wrong.. Or half right

.
It seemed like the 7.62 VEPR's sold on Atlantic's website had standard AK mags in the pictures.
You can't really customize them as much as a standard AK. If you aren't a fan of the stock you might want to look elsewhere. Also, I'm never really been sure which rifle style they are similar to in regards to aftermarket fore end rails and such.
