I see the National Firearms Museum has one in their collection. But for
some reason they are calling it a MAK-90 which is wrong because it's
really a NHM-90.

From the ATF Curio and Relic FAQ:
Q: What is a firearm curio or relic? Firearm
curios or relics include firearms which have special value to
collectors because they possess some qualities not ordinarily
associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or
defensive weapons. To be recognized as curios or relics, firearms must
fall within one of the following categories:
- Have been manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date, but not including replicas thereof; or
- Be
certified by the curator of a municipal, State, or Federal museum
which exhibits firearms to be curios or relics of museum interest; or
- Derive
a substantial part of their monetary value from the fact that they are
novel, rare, bizarre, or from the fact of their association with some
historical figure, period, or event.
The value of the Norinco AKs have at least tripled since they were first imported. Their current prices are derived from the fact we can't get any more imported and the NHM-90 and NHM-91 are far more rare than the MAK-90s.
I see there are Norinco pre-ban AK's classified as C&R on the
official ATF list, so maybe someone motivated enough can submit the request to add the NHM-90?
COLLECTORS WANTING A DETERMINATION

2) Reasons the collector believes the item merits the classification; and
3) Data concerning the history of the item, including production figures, if available, and market value.

These firearms were imported as sporting weapons after the ban, & since the ban was in '89, they aren't 50 years old yet. Maybe in 2039. GARY N4KVE

The AK's listed are specific firearms by serial number. They are the commemorative rifles listed in the gun rags with the etching and plating etc. ONLY THAT ONE RIFLE is a C&R as it is a collector's piece and has been approved by ATF. So, when they list "...Norinco (Chinese) AK47S, 7.62x39mm caliber, serial number 1620127..." only THAT rifle is a C&R.

Wouldn't they automatically be C & R after 50 years of manufacture/import unless the law changes ? I don't see why you said maybe.

I've always wondered what made those few rifles by serial number special.
Bet its some big bucks for those.

On another forum someone said those specific rifles were special commemorative editions in honor of something.
Since posting this thread I've learned that the National Firearms Museum is not able to issue C&R letters of recommendation to the ATF due to them being a private museum.
