I made a deal today for an early Norinco 56S, preban gun. It has a blued carrier. This gun is mostly sanitized. There is no factory 66, 386, or similar arsenal logo. Instead it has only an early M prefix serial number "M003087". All parts are matching. On the left side of the receiver above the pistol grip are the importer stampings:
AKM / 47S
Semi Auto
7.62x39 mm
Norinco
Sile N.Y., N.Y.
Made in China
Is the M prefix simply a serial number prefix or does it indicate these rifles were made in the Ming Shan (spelling?) arsenal?
Anything else you know about these early pre-bans would be welcomed.
Thanks,
Earl

I cannot tell you anything more than you already know, but wanted to say beautiful rifle.
A lot of Preban Chi-com's have been popping up lately.
Oh, and check out this link: http://chicom47.com/
I've got one just like it. bought it new in 1988 for $360.00 OTD which included 3 mags and 1,100 rounds of copper washed steel core ammo.
ETA my serial number is MS0097XX
I picked up one of these at a gunshow 5-6 years ago, it was totally worn-in , mildly rusty, etc etc, but still shot like new, one of my favorite AK rifles and extremely accurate for what it is. Not a rare variant of the Chinese type by any means but one of the best Ak rifles money can buy.

I've got one of those too, my serial is M0013XX.
My metal isn't quite in such good shape, as the previous owner didn't
take the best care of it. He'd refinished the wood in a brown stain and
there were several dings in the stock. I sent the stock over to
Z_Recto at theakforums.net and he restored it to look exactly like yours and even somehow fixed the dings.
Yours is the only other one I've seen on here.
I just picked one up in excellent condition, except the bolt carrier is bright instead of blued. The bolt is blued, all numbers match. The Sile came with 3 mags, sling, hard case, bayonet, and the original manual!
