Were the Norinco 84s ever sold with woodgrain colored brown synthetic mags which are similar to E. German AK-74 mags? I thought the real 84S mags were metal. Thanks!
All came with 3x30 round steel mags that i have ever seen, some of the 223 mags made from modified 5.45 mags that were sold with the Century Arms SAR-3 rifles have got mixed in with norinco gun 'packages'. In my experience they work in the Norinco 84s fine but have heard otherwise, these mags will have a floorplate marked "223", and are not original to the Norinco
Thanks SGammo. I'm looking at a 84-S that is being sold with what appears to be three E. German 5.45 mags. I had always thought the original Norinco mags were ribbed metal. Thanks for the confirmation!
All metal, most of the modified 74 mags, especially the Century ones were known not to work in the Norinco's as they were to fit another breed of 223 AK, the Weiger type I believe.
Also, Bulgy plastic ones will fit and lock OK, I have had mixed success with them functioning them though.
I have also read that a trunnion mod on the Norincos will allow the Bulgy ones to work better, never done it though.
BTW, at a going rate of 50 bucks per Norinco mag, and the known unreliability of all others, should factor into the price you pay, IE, expect the gun NOT to work, without factory mags, unless proven otherwise.
If you want cheap 84 mags, get the pro-mag A5. The tab needs to be filed down a bit to fit, but the two I have worked fine. Have about 600rds. through them. That being said nothing will work as good as the original mags.
