What can you tell me about this Chinese 56?
Today after shooting I strolled into the gun store at the range I frequent. Wasn't planning to buy anything, until red bakelite caught my attention.
Long story short it is a Chinese rifle marked only 56, the S/N, and C/S on the selector. No Norinco, Polytech, Prochine or even importer markings. All the S/N's match on the parts, but it did not come with a bayonet or Chinese magazine. The slant brake shows marks from where a bayonet has been on the rifle, so I assume it had one originally.
It has been shot but not much. The guy at the gun store said only one pallet of these were brought in as dealer samples. Not sure if true, and suspect the pallet was really a shipping container, but whatever. It will look great next to my Poly fixed wood spiker.
Check the barrel.
Probably early import Norinco. Nice and desirable.
Looks great! How much do these cost if I was to run across another one? Back in the 90s I use to see Chinese/Viet SKS with similar stocks.

About $1400
There is marking on the barrel like the photo above, but it is not legible (to my eyes anyway).
I paid $1,400 out the door. A ridiculous amount for a nearly 30 year Chinese stamped AK with plastic furniture, but I was offered $1,600 shipped by PM within an hour of posting pics on another forum.
i beleive those are called 56s-3
Thanks. Is there any way to determine when it was made or imported?
Family photo:

no not that im aware of
Look closely at the markings on the barrel- are they - "IA CO SAC CA" ? 66 in a triangle... If so that is indeed a 56S-3 imported by Import Arms Co.out of Sacramento Ca. It is likely a very early import model. That was the only marking they had on them. Check this link and google " IA CO SAC CA 56S" for more info ... It's a rare one.

There are markings on both sides of the barrel like the one in the photo, however they are not clear, and my older eyes cannot focus in on them. I tried taking a picture, but my older camera was having trouble, then the batteries died. I am not sure the text is legible though. I thought it was "handling marks" before seeing the photo of the markings on the other rifle.

Try a jewelers loupe- they are great to keep around or a magnifying glass.

I can read the "IA CO SAC" clearly on one side with a magnifying glass, and think I see "China" on the other side of the barrel. I am unable to make out anything else, but think that is enough to ID it.
Anyone know what the "C" selector marking stands for?
