I know most nhm guns had a 20" barrel, but not all. I remember seeing a few in 5.56 w/ 16" barrels similar to what you are discribing during the ban transition. I am sorry I do not have more details, but it may be a legit post ban, rather than a rebarrel 20" to 16" job... With that said, $800 is probably a bit high. I would say more like $650.

Ive had a NHM-91, that had a 20" barrel in 762x39. I havent seen nor heard of the mix of the two.
Look at your serial number. Most will have a 92, 93, 94 starting this. Thats the year it was imported. Maybe that will help you track it down in a DB.

Are you sure it is a nhm-91 rather than an nhm-90. The 90's did come in 16" .223 and are fairly rare. The info I see, says that 91's were all 20", but that could be wrong as there was alot of confusion during that time. I gues it is possible that it is a nhm-90 configuration that was caught up in and cleared customs in early 91. That could be a very rare sample you have or a rebarrel or cut down job. The 84-S stamp on the barrel is correct for nhm-90 and nhm-91s. Check and see if it has the nhm-91 rivet where the rear tang of the magazine hits the receiver and report back.

hi , it does have rivet in tang, the mags are drilled out to function and id forsure stamped a nhm 91 ,guess its a mistake on the markings as guy says original barrel and looks to be true.even has a nhm 91 manual< weird . i guess a real pre ban?

It is most definately not a pre ban gun. All nhm's came in in 1990 or 1991 after the 1989 assualt weapons import ban signed by Pres Bush I and before the 1994 assault weapons manufacture ban.

that gun was a preban caught in customs then neutered to be like the rest of the postbans that were being imported during that time 84s is the preban original model number mark. thats why it has a threaded barrel. nhm 91 is the postban model number configuration. 16 inch or not. sounds like someone added the rear buttstock and pistol grip like the original design. hope that helps. pictures might help better though
