Been out of the shooting sports for a while and I'm wanting to get back in and do a few mods to my Norinco NHM-91 as well. I picked it up back in `95 at the Knob Creek Machine Gun shoot and it is still *bone stock*. I've still got the original thumbhole stock on it, but one of the first things that I'd like to do is get the tack-welded muzzle nut off the thing and put a regular RPK or other muzzle break on it. My question in this regard is very straightforward and perhaps a bit naive: can I legally do that? Do I need to install a certain number of U.S.-made parts to be 922r compliant before removing said nut? Any thoughts in that regard would be most appreciated, as would be help in finding a good break for the rifle.
In addition I'd also like to get a bipod for the gun as it came, strangely, without one. I've found one
here and I'm wondering if anyone has leads on others or thoughts on inexpensive bipods in general. Like I said, I haven't been in the shooting sports for a long while now, but I'd like to get a few of the basic necessities for this old Norinco, so any further thoughts about essential or recommended upgrades would be much appreciated.
If you swap out that "muzzle nut" for any other muzzle device you'll have to meet922r to be legal. Some people will chime in and say who cares about 922r but if it were me I'd do a conversion, it's not hard at all to do.
I took mine from this:
To this:
Tapco slant brake
Tapco G2 FCG w/plate
Ironwoods Maple stock set
All done myself
You can put a muzzle brake on it with out having to do all the 922 compliant stuff. You just have to re-tack weld the new brake in place. If your not shooting a suppressor, there is really no reason to have the brake removable.
As far as removing the old one, The spot welds are so weak that and adjustable wrench and some left hand force is all you need to remove it.
Cool! Thanks for all the input. But another question or two: what *exactly* constitutes 922r compliance? That is, how many parts exactly do I need to swap out?

If you convert it you need to have 10 or fewer imported parts. When I did mine I had 9 when I was done so that was 1 more than I needed.

Singtoe is correct, you can swap out just the muzzle device
as long as you reweld it. But IMO it's just as easy to do the other stuff as well so you get rid of the cornhole stock and it'll look like a real AK when you're done.
I'll shamelessly pimp the thread I created when I converted my NHM-90
Did mine with a K-var stock, pistol grip and handguards as 3 pieces, Tapco trigger as 3 more pieces, and a US made slant muzzle brake, total of 7 US items, bringing me to 9 imported
