Polytech advice

I dont know much about Polytech. Found a guy who said he bought a an ak, 10 years or more ago. Wants to get rid of it because he does not shoot it. He does not know much about it and said it had Polyteck on it, with a "red side folding stock." He is going to send picks to me by e-mail. He said it has one "banana mag" and a drum mag. No box.

Did Polyteck make a stock like this? The guy said he bought it, shot it one time, and put it away. It came up in conversation, and he was not looking to sell it. I just asked if he wanted to sell it.

I figure if it looks good I will buy it.

Yes Polytech made a stamped side folding red Bakelite furniture rifle.

$500 with a drum? I hate you.

Well, with my luck. When I get the picks, im sure it will be an SKS.

Lets just say the deal comes through, whats it worth $.

2 to 3 times what you are going to pay for it if it's in NIB like condition

I picked up an unfired Polytech Legend just before the 2008 election for $750 out the door

I've never seen a folding stock on a SKS.

The SKS did not come with a folding stock, but it is/was a very common upgrade.

Here it is, one mag has Poly China on base. The other mag has a rib on the back with a small 22 on it. Both mags are loaded with 10-15 year old wolf ammo, one is loaded with Chinese ammo head stamp 71 over 92. The drum looks like a 75 rnd, it has a 36 in a triangle. The finish on the rifle is about 98%. It Needs a good cleaning. The stock locks up tight. The guy I bought it from said he shot it once and put it away. Came with the sling also.

So how did I do? What is a quick estimate of value? What type of mag is the one with the rib?

great find!! you better hold onto that one, won't find a deal like that again. hard to say what the other mag is. look on the spine for any stamps and post a pic. someone could prolly tell you. congrats.

The magazine with the rib along the back and a "22" on it is probably Romanian. As you probably know, Chinese mags [EDIT per Rayman1's point below] USUALLY do not have a rib. Euro made mags usually do. I have two Romanian AK's that came new with mags like yours.

Its already been shot, fire away. Collectability would increase a bit if it were unfired w/the original box and accessories IMHO.

Not true - some Chinese magazines do have a rib - the Sino-Soviet magazine and the Chinese Transitional magazine. Both have the rib on the back.

The answer is YES and YES. Just clean it and oil it after shooting to keep it in top shape. It'll always be worth more than you paid for it, and it should keep rising in value as long as you keep it. You should definitly shoot it and enjoy it. While you're at the range, I'm sure it will get some attention from other AK fans as well.

yep, shoot it! The chrome lined barrel helps it stay in tip top shape if you skimp on cleaning in my experience, and it cleans so easy. Hard part is cleaning the receivers little nooks and crannies, but ear swabs work good.

A good way to get the nooks and crannies clean (if you're shooting corrosive for example) is to let your cleaning product sit all over the gun for a minute or two, then hit everything you can see with the air compressor. The cleaning product loosens the particles and the air blows them out. I don't bother to do it unless cleaning corrosive, but the air blast does help when it matters.

I said it is probably Romanian and it probably is. 22 mark is more than likely Romanian. Yes - there are some Chinese mags with ribs like you say, but the have 66 and a triangle on them usually.

No. They used slants, or plain nuts, or an interpretation of a birdcage. Never seen a factory CHICOM with an AK-74 brake.

great find: those red side folder polytech's are the rarest and are very hard to come by & you stole yours!

That auction has been listed forever, he might find a sucker to buy it at that price, but thats not the norm. These Red sidefolders sit around $1000-1600, w/$1600 being truley NIB...
