AMD Prices: Why so cheap at CFS?
Okay, I have to know what's going on with this, as it defies logic.
You have Centerfire Systems selling FEG AMD-65s imported by TGI for $400, but everywhere else they are running up to $100-$150 higher for the same rifle. What in tarnation is this all about?
I have three AKs; one of them is an AMD I got from CFS. Now, while it isn't as refined as my other two Bulgys, it's definitely smoother than any of the other "bargain" AKs out there. Very nice trigger pull and break, very smooth cycling with no hangups on the bolt carrier, original chrome lined barrel and no cant to the FSB. Yeah, the folding stock is tight, as is the magwell, but those are minor issues.
Thoughts?
A LOOSE mag well CAN be a serious problem. Mine is going back to CFS - they were very good about it, and I'm waiting for my tag to send it.
It is so loose, that the Hungarian mags (ya know, the ones from the same country as the gun) won't feed a round into the chamber. It has about 1/8" of horizontal play in the magwell - that's right - fore and aft.
This is because theese guns are built on SA 2000 10 round receivers - and those had a different mag catch and trigger guard setup. I had to search REALLY hard on the web to find this out. I don't think anyone knows this here - at least I can get no one to comment on the mag wells - so I went hunting.
I figure that on some like yours, TGI MAY have put on a new trigger guard, and this solves the problem. On mine they didn't and steel mags don't wobble - they flop. This is highly unsat. So... back it goes.
I'll see what happens next.
Sorry to hear that.

Like I said, mine is a tight little machine, for which I'm grateful. When I ordered it, I specifically asked them to check the magazine well for fit so I wouldn't
get one with lots of wobble.
These little guns really intrigue me. I just put in an offer for an acog, so if that falls through, I think I'll settle for one of these devils.
I'm gonna try your approach by asking if they can double check the magwell issue. Everytime I call them (CF) though, they're aways very short and/or apathetic. If they don't want the hassle of exchang I'td be in their interest too. Another thing, I checked one of these out at the local dumhams and it def had mismatched #s and a horrid finish. Pretty much on all threads about these they say they match though. Just odd I guess.
*also, they're cheap enough as it is, but does CF have any dicounts to forum members or anyhwere else?
They were great on the phone for me, and I wore them out with things I wanted them to check: Magazine well fit, FSB cant and proper folding stock function. (I wanted the stock to operate smoothly with no wobble either.) I think they were so accomodating because I established a rapport with one of the sales people and anytime I'd call, I'd ask for that particular person.
The finish isn't bad on mine. It's not a high quality gunkote like my Bulgys, but it's better than many others out there. All matching serial numbers, otherwise I would have sent it back. I think my only complaint is that my magazine well is a bit tight.
If there are any discounts, they didn't offer them. At those prices, I doubt they exist.
If your mag well is a bit tight - can you still QUICKLY and EASILY do a mag change??? I picked up one in a shop recently in which this was IMPOSSIBLE to do, ad eve could tie-up the gun.
IS there ANY horizontal play with the mag in the magwell? I mean, can you slide it back and forth front to rear?
Again, these Trigger Guards are not to spec - they can work, but I'm wandering what is better. A tad loose or tight?
Mine will be on the way back soon.
The addictive thing on these is the SMOOTH action - look at the bolt compared to other AKs! Also, I don't think you will get a loose stock - haven't heard of one yet.

Yes, I can do mag changes relatively quickly, but it seems to be easier when I'm using 30 round European magazines.

The 20 round Hungarian mags seem to give me problems initially, so I can't figure that one out. Maybe because the Hungarian mags are brand new and the European mags are used. There is a bit of horizontal play with the mag in the magwell, but it is negligable; no more so than my Bulgies.
As far as my AMD 65 goes it works with bulgarian, european surplus, and tapco mags. Although I don't know why it would not take my korean 75rd drum. Any thoughts?

the korean drums are a crap shoot. i had to send one back cause the welds/stamps were broken. even their 30 & 40 rnd mags are junk. my romy drum it twice the quality of my S. Korean. as far as lock up, i had to file a bit off the bottom of the locking tab on my replacement one to get it to lock in good
Thanks ak47mays
That makes sense. The Korean drum mag that came with my rifle also wouldn't fit, period. So I just ended up selling it at the next gunshow.
It fits pretty tightly in my yugo m70 but not at all in the amd 65. i dont want to file the tab down too much where i cant work it in my yugo.
I found the amd 65's for sale at buds for $414, does anyone know if they are in fact TGI builds?

not sure about bud's amd's. call and ask. but i forgot to answer the OP's question, "why so cheap at CFS". not really sure. i got mine from CFS and i have had nothing but good luck w/ it. i'd say go for it. they also have a great CS department so if you need any questions answered before you order just contact them. the TGI AMD's are high quality factory rifles opened up to hi-cap by TGI.
I called buds and they said it is a TGI build, so I decided to order it today. Comes out to around $450 after transfer.

Bought FEG MD65 model on clearance at Dunham's today for $399.97. Looked at 4 different guns in show case, picked best fitted rifle, no sight cant, mag locks up tight with no wobble. This is my 4th AMD 65 rifle.
So is the AMD-65 from CFS good to go?
From what I gathered: if I call to order one, I should ask about the magazine wobble? Anything else I should ask them to inspect?

Thats all I asked when I ordered from buds, and I got a flawless working one, I am supprised the price is so low for what I recieved.
If CFS is selling TGI builds then i think they are gtg.
Maybe one more thing you can ask about is the folding wire stock, make sure it is solid, but still is easy to manipulate ( release button easy to press).
