bought an SA85M, stock is a little different
I bought this and am waiting for it to arrive. What do you make of the finger grooves? I have a Bulgarian AK74 butt stock coming for it but this thumb hole has me intrigued a little.

It's been cut and refinished. Are you asking what we think personally or if it came like that?
The guy bought it brand new like that. I have not seen another with the grooves, just wanted to know if it is a distributor special or something.
Personally I have never seen nor heard of one like that...it could be possible, but unlikely. Also consider the bullshit factor of the seller. We've all heard the ridiculous stories before like people who claim to have purchased a MAK-90 marked rifle in 1988(I swear it's true, I bought it before da ban...its per-banned!) <sic>
I could be mistaken, but I stick with my original assessment.
Well, either way, I'll keep it. The Bulgarian blonde buttstock and pistol grip I got is like brand new and will be on it soon. (please don't jump me about 922R, I know)
Mine had the top finger groove but the others look like they were added.
where did you get the stock? thanks
I'm the persone he bought it from and thats the way i bought it frome CDNN new in the box
abought 10 years ago
they had some lost in the werhouse sale along with some polytec sporter's
You could find the email/PM of Michael Kassnar and ask him yourself. Charles Daly just closed down, but I'm sure he can be found somewhere, perhaps even the industry forum here still.
Send him a link to this thread so he can see the pic.

edit: you can find him in the Industry section, Charles Daly forum, posting under the name Charles Daly.

Thanks bro

I don't think that they believed me.

Just because CDNN had some(one? did you ask if there were others with these stocks?), doesn't mean there isn't a story behind them.
I've seen NIB SA-85M's with gold and black garbage all over them as a Vietnam commemorative, this could be a similar story for example.
The only thing the seller responding here has confirmed is that it was purchased that way, but not necessarily imported. That's why I suggested emailing the president of the company that imported them. Wouldn't that be the best answer?
I asked if it was a dealer done mod. It really is not all that important anyway, thanks for all of the input.
Well it is important because you've peaked my curiosity :)
I just like having unanswered questions answered, that's all. I don't care who's right or wrong, just having the info is what I'm after now. Another useless file to place deep into the memory hive.
HaHa, yeah, maybe I will ask him.
Who's got a picture of the Vietnam commemorative AK with the stickers on it?

That's the one Mak...damn it's ugly.
That AK and the others like it were also sold as NIB, because they were. They were also modified and still sold as NIB, because they were still NIB.
I did throw a PM the way of Mr. Kassnar by the way. However, since the Chuck Daly collapse I do not know if he will be quick to respond as I'm sure he is very busy right now.
I picked up a shitty version of the Vietnam version or a knock off. It has changed greatly and is no longer black.
Your safety lever is from the Viet model for sure.
Below is the reply from Mr. Kassnar in regards to the stock in question:
"Those finger grooves, other than the top one, are definitely after-market. We never imported a model with a thumbhole stock like that. Also, I find it highly unlikely that CDNN would have modified the original gun, unless the stock had cracked and they needed to replace it."

So evidently CDNN purchased them from someone who made them locally would be my guess. So there you go, it isn't original but it is unique.
i used to have a stock like that with the finger grooves, when i bought my sa85 it came with the stock thumbhole and the finger grooved one.
its comphier n feels good, but i sold both the stocks as i just use a regular stock with pg

Why sell it? Oh yea, did you put 5 US made parts in it before you put the new buttstock on? You should do this prior to selling it to avoid any complications or sell it with the thumbhole on with the full stock as a bonus on the side.
Well, I was going to sell it and buy two more Saigas. Then, I took it out again and I just can't sell. I actually am gonna buy another SA85M. Waiting on the guy to send me payment info from an auction. It is honestly the nicest AK I have owned, and I love how slick the action is and how well it is put together. It is my favorite.
Well good, because it does look nice. And I bet that thumbhole is comfortable, original or not :)
It actually has a Bulgarian AK74 butt stock on it now.

Yea I saw that...which is why I mentioned your parts count :)
But if you were to shoot it with the original, it would be very comfortable is what I meant...since my SA-85M shot best using the original stock.
i have a kassnar underfolder pre ban bitches

And may you trip upon your sling and bend thy folder sir!

As I am not a fan of underfolders, I do not accept the term which you have bestowed upon me.

I don't care for underfolders, I like my KBI (postban import by Kassnar) just fine.

Did you add the slant brake? I want one on both of mine and I am not sure how to go about it. I really don't want to change the front sight.

Yes, I threaded the barrel. Might as well change the FSB and gasblock if you do it as you are going to have to remove the front crosspin anyway to install the retaining pin.
Thanks for the info. Where can I get those parts?

Apex gun parts. Romanian parts fit fine.
I looked there, they have Romanian front sights but no gas blocks. They have East German front sights as well as gas blocks, think these will work?

no sir i ordered east german pats for the same project and had another member on here try to fit it for does not work

Try the equipment exchange here, at AKfiles.com and theakforum, you may try contacting Henderson defense, I got some Romanian ones from them before. I know Romanian work as I unbanned two KBI SA85Ms.
I should have saved the ones from all the SAR-1s I switched out. Those would at least have cleaning rod retainers for SA85Ms but I tossed them.
thanks for the info guys, I am looking for parts. You are right, I want to do it the right way. If you run across what I need, please PM me.
Found what I needed (2 gas blocks, 2 slant brakes, 2 front sights and 2 cleaning rods) at Black Market Arms. Thanks guys.

That was I who purchased them from you. Personally the thumb hole stock w/finger grooves looks so professionally done it is hard to believe either someone put their time into doing it or if it wasn't already made this way. I love the way it feels compared to the standard SA-85M stock, glad you decided to sell them to me

That's good shit.
My Romy parts are here, I need a good smith to install them for me. Then I am going to have the rifles Cerakoted.
Got it done, starting on the other one tomorrow.

Very nice young Padawan.
