Just picked up a AMD-65 Kit. A couple of Questions....
I just picked up an AMD-65 Kit. I really didn't have a desire for one but I think I got a good price on it so I bought it. I got everything you see below, including the US made receiver. All the numbers match and I'm amazed at how good of shape the barrel and bolt are. This thing couldn't have been shot too much.
Now, I know the wood is not correct for the gun and I plan on replacing that, the trigger group, the gas rod, and the metal handguard piece that the forward grip attaches to. I'd like to get all of these parts, US made and from one place, any suggestions? I don't need anything special as far as the wood goes, it can be plastic or wood, black or wood grain, just something decent. This isn't going to be a show piece. I'll probably just spot weld the whole thing together because it's quicker and easier for me. Also, does anyone recognize the brake on the front of it? It doesn't have any markings so I'm assuming it's not US made?

Hi coltc,
I see that you found many of the items you need to restore the AMD. It would sure be nice to see that brought back to it's glory. I suggest that you do a search for a Tapco AMD extended muzzle brake. It will give you the legal barrel length and retain the authentic look of the original brake.

Plus it counts as 922r USA made part!
A standard AMD bbl with the standard Hungarian muzzle break does NOT measure the Federal required 16". You would need to go Class Three as a Short Bbl Rifle (S.B.R.) and pay the tax stamp ($200) and all the fun Federal paperwork, or you could get the USA made extended muzzle break... Seems pretty simple choice eh?

Ya, I got lucky and a member here posted all the parts I needed shortly after me posting this.
I understand that I need the barrel to be 16", and I'd like to replace the brake with a US made one so that it would count towards my 6 compliance parts needed to use surplus mags. I'm just not sure what kind of brake is on this thing now. I don't think it is a standard brake, I could be wrong though. I don't see any stamping on it either. It does make the barrel exactly 16" when attached, and if it's a US made brake I'd just like to run with it. I guess I could always replace some of the mag parts if I had to, and this brake wasn't US made. I guess it all depends what the cheapest way to do it is.
You need the AMD lower guard/pistol grip plus another Hungarian grip. The extension/brake you have would be legal if welded to the sight base at the cleaning rod stop. It would be better with the Tapco one-piece extension/brake but they are hard to find. Once the extension/brake is welded, it becomes part of the barrel so is not counted for or against the foreign parts count regadless of origin. The forward pistol grip also does not count separately from the rear grip - the forearm/grip counts as one imported part if you use the AMD part. Assuming a USA receiver and AMD furniture, you would not have to replace the gas piston if you used imported magazines with either a USA follower or floor plate.

Thanks. I was unaware that once I welded the muzzle brake on that it would not count for or against compliance parts. I do plan on welding it. I have a US made receiver, a US made gas piston coming, and a US trigger group coming, I also have the AMD metal handguard with AMD grips coming, so I guess I'm good to go with surplus mags.
I really like the way rivet builds look but I'll probably just weld the whole thing together to make it easier on me, sand blast it, and duracoat it up. I have all of that stuff here so hopefully this build won't take long.
'so I guess I'm good to go with surplus mags.'
Yes, the gas piston does it for you. Make sure you let it have some play.
Please post some pics when you're done building it!
