Are there threads under that AMD-65 barrel extension?
On a TGI-manufactured AMD-65 there is a barrel extension that is tack welded to the FSB, and a snake brake attached to the extension.
Can any of you guys who have SBR'd your AMD-65 (TGI-made) tell me if:
1. the snake brake can unscrew from the extension?
and
2. if the barrel extension is screwed onto the barrel?
Nobody knows?
i would like to know as well, but by the way the brake wiggles I doubt there are threads :(
The barrel has threads, don't know if the extension does but I'm going to guess it does if it has an original AMD65 brake.

So have you removed your extension to confirm?
The 2" extension commonly used on the 16" AMD-65s has internal threads on the barrel end and external threads on the brake end, all 14x1mmLH. How else could they do it? Go to the trouble of having a slip-fit on the barrel end that would have to be clamped some way to maintain brake timing while welding? Some of these extensions get loose at the weld because for the aforementioned brake timing they may not have been screwed down tight before welding. I plan to take the whole mess off mine and replace with the Tapco 4.25" one-piece brake/extension if and when they make any more of them. Not only is a little shorter (but still over 16"), but by trimming the rear face, you can time the brake with a tight fit before welding.
I forgot about this thread, but yes, the extension is screwed onto the barrel. Usually it will unscrew after you grind/file off the weldment. The brake is also screwed to the extension and pinned. You most likely will have to drill the pin out, unless you can put the extension pipe in a strong vise, then use a wrench on the flats on the brake to shear off the pin. In case you ruin the brake, they are cheap. The original brake that came on mine is lying around here someplace. I think I'll take it off the extension pipe and maybe put it on my AMD-63 once in awhile just for grins. The things are so cheap they aren't worth selling. BTW, the muzzle attachment indexing plunger in the sight base is usually disabled on the AMD-65 builds. If you SBR it, you'll want to fix that so the brake doesn't shoot loose.
I just tried what I told you to do and I couldn't break the brake loose from the extension pipe, not even after drilling out the pin. The thing must be welded somehow - maybe they drill a hole and weld it to the threads, grind the weldment flush, then drill and pin it where it was welded. So I threw it in my shop trash can. As far as I can tell, you'll need to buy a brake.
Great information. Thanks, Saxman!
