I wanted to get the process going of registering my AMD-65 as an SBR and cutting the weld off where the barrel meets the extension. First of all, would this be advisable? Second, would a FSB/GB combo be a good idea as a replacement?
Has anyone tried this?
I'm not going to SBR mine, but I am going to take off the 2" pipe extension and original brake which makes the barrel longer than it has to be, and replacing it with the 4.25" one-piece extension/brake which brings it out to 16.15" and looks loads better. Once you grind the weld, whatever you have on yours should thread right off unless it's also pinned. You might just let an experienced person do this. The original barrel is 12.4" to the muzzle, 11.9" to the front of the sight base. The 4.25" combo piece is as short as you can get and stay 16". Look at the AMDs on Gunbroker to see many examples of both types of barrel extension - you could save yourself a lot of trouble and still look pretty good with the combo piece on it. If you want it really short, like with a muzzle nut or short brake, then SBR is worth it. If you want to maintain the 'snake' brake look, you only pick up 1.25" by going SBR instead of the combo piece. Just food for thought

Could you provide an example on GB that shows the "short as can be without being SBR" look? I can't find an example. Thanks!

Found out the other day that Tapco is (was) the manufacturer of the 4.25" extended AMD-65 brake, but it's out of production. They have a new run scheduled in about a month. It's for a manufacturer making some more 'AMD's, but they will make some extra for their retailers. At this point it's unknown how many will hit the market or who will have them, but I would regularly check the sites of the larger retailers carrying Tapco products. There won't be many of these available.
I am waiting on my tax stamp for an AMD-65 SBR right now. The file was misplaced by the feds, but I am in no big hurry, everything is back on track. Looking forward to it. Not a big deal to get the SBR. Just make sure that your forms are printed on both sides of the papers you submit or they will be returned.
been thinking about sbring mine and putting a slant brake on when I need it small (in the truck) and the amd brake at other times
