Just got the last SLR-105.
Always wanted one of these and finally got it. This was advertised by K-Var as the last SLR-105 they have to sell, no more will be coming in. It was listed in a post by K-Var on another AK board. Picked it up from my FFL yesterday. It is in (was) "ban" configuration. No muzzle brake, threads removed, no bayonet lug. Very nice gun. Paper work said it was made in 2004 in Bulgaria. Test target is marked 8/31/11.
I got a non-ban front sight base and Bulgarian muzzle brake. Put them on today. Took a little over an hour.
I'm into it a little over $700. i don't think it was too bad of a deal. I'm going to try and get out an shoot it tomorrow.
It remains to be seen if it is truly the last one. Either way just what I wanted.
Not a bad deal, but they say the "last ones" are coming in about all their rifles. Six months later they give it another designation and sell more of an identical rifle.
true, kvar loves to screw us. Good work on that FSB. You should have replaced the GB too while you had it off, I'm anal like that
I thought about changing the gas block but it doesn't bother me. What actually is supposed to go on the accessory lug anyway? Time will tell if it really the last one.
Ted:
Nice rifle and good job on changing the front sight blocks! Was it hard to do?
Despite reading countless dozens of posts explaining how to do it, I remain hesitant to try replacing the fsb on my 105. Not having a press, I'd have to knock the pins out with a hammer. I have read some posts that said they popped right out and others have written that they would not budge no matter how hard they were pounded. I'm more concerned with the alignment of the new block and the ease of simply pinning it in place. Did the holes in the block line-up with the cuts in your barrel? Despite having a drill press, I lack the confidence that I could re-drill the holes and re-pin the block without canting the fsb.

I think it will be at least one of the last rifles, in the sense that they won't be manufactured anymore. Maybe K-Var will find some more in the back of the warehouse again, but they aren't being made after Bulgaria switched to Nato calibers.
nothing goes on it that we will ever be able to own, just "correct". You did an awesome job and it looks great!
Congrats on finding your 105... I know you've been looking for one for awhile. Now my 105 is safe!!!
The FSB is very easy to switch. Mine took a couple of soft blows with a rubber mallet and it was off. A few minutes of time to restore a rifle the way it should be!!!
The swap was easy. The pins came out pretty easy with a punch. I used a bench grinder to reduce the diameter of a 1/8" punch to slightly smaller than the pin diameter. Then I used a 12 ton Harbor Freight press to take off the old sight base. I put the new sight base in a toaster oven at 300F to expand it a bit so it would go on easier (may not really be necessary). Roughly lined it up and tapped it back on with a dead blow hammer, then tapped the sight into alignment. Once it cooled it was a tight fit. Had to whack it pretty hard with the dead blow while aligning it. At that point the pin holes were almost aligned. I used a small carbide bit for a Dremel tool to clean up the holes and make them perfectly aligned. Reinstalled the original pins (tight fit, careful not to ding up the base) and used a bit of super blue to touch up any shiny spots. Probably took 45 minutes total.
Now I gotta find a real nice wood Bulgarian stock set.
I really like wood stocks also, but I think that poly looks good too.
Nice work. Need to do that to my SLR 105 when I escape to freedom.
Here are a few different Bulgarian wood stock sets.
w/ pistol grip,
w/o pistol grip.

Thanks, I actually have one of those new blond sets in my closet, but I don't believe they were the military issue type. Anyone know for sure? I may put it on anyway.
It's what came on all three of my Bulgarian AK-74 parts guns and what is shown in most of the parts kits on the market. The handguards on mine were a darker brown and I refinished it and the buttstock with amber shellac.

I have the blond Copes kit and a few rough surplus sets from Apex. The Copes kits are different than the Bulgarian surplus sets. With the Copes kits the upper handguard is one piece of wood instead of being laminated. The lower handguard is not cut for the metal spring in the back and the palm swell is different. And the butt stock and butt plate do not have the hole for the cleaning kit,
I got my ban-style SLR-105 in around 2006 for $355 and recently de-banned it myself for around $30. Shot it the other day and love it. Smooth, great trigger, very accurate.
