ak 74 ejecting to the left?

Built my first bulgy ak74. Went out to shoot it and I found that the brass being ejected isn't right, as nearly every spent piece of brass would jam. I took the dust cover off and it cycles fine but the brass ejects out the left side of the gun. Wtf?

Ideas?

What kind of receiver did you use in your build?
Is it a bent flat or a complete receiver?
Is your ejector on the left or right lower rail?
Did you do any trimming on the ejector during your build?

If it was on the right, it would be difficult for the bolt to get past it, wouldn't it?

It is the NDS-2 "EZ" from NoDakSpud.
Complete receiver.
Ejector is on the left.
Didnt mess with the ejector during the build.

I would speculate that the case is striking something in the rifle and bouncing to the left.
My suggestion is to carefully examine the parts inside the rifle to try and determine what the case is hitting. If that doesn't work, you might pull a bullet and try the ejection cycle manually, watching the case carefully.

What's the condition of your extractor and spring?

I got it used, but visually it looks find. Some wear, but nothing out of the ordinary.

On the AK74 the position of the ejector is very important, it needs to ride right against the bottom of the bolt. I have had to bend it up just a little to get it to eject right on some guns.
But it sounds like your problem is in the extractor spring, it sounds like it is weak.
Try it out by removing your bolt from the carrier & slipping a round under the extractor, and try pulling it straight out. If it pops out easy you will need to replace the spring.
Are you shooting the lacquer coated steel case ammo. If so you could try the zinc plated Silver Bear, or the polymer coated Wolf ammo, this could fix you problem without any work.
The lacquer coated steel case ammo has a tendency to stick in the chamber on some guns.

Look at the hammer pin. If the hammer pin is flush with the receiver, but the trigger pin protrudes slightly, the center support rivet is a hair too long. This makes the ejector hit the rim sometimes too far outboard, which can cause the case to spin, hit the side of the receiver and bounce back in. NOt an issue with 7.62 'cause the rim is bigger, but as mentioned above, the ejector on a 5.45 is a more critical dimension. Note - it is not the ejector overall width, it is its position relative to centerline.

Solution - remove center support rivet, trim a few thou, and replace, or weld ejector a tiny bit longer. The latter is only for a competent TiG welder.
