Real Russian SVD for $29,900?
This guy is selling a genuine Soviet-made SVD for $29,900 on GB?! Now we're all used to some pretty outlandish claims from sellers on GB but this one is the wildest one I've seen in a while. Read the elongated description the seller wrote to validate the exorbant price tag.

If I recall correctly I've seen this guy sell items in the past for some pretty ridiculous prices and they usually come with a paragraph about how a friend helped him get started and a portion of the proceeds goes to some benefit where it buys some kid in Africa a pair of shoes who has never previously owned a pair. The thing that makes me VERY suspicious is that some of the serial numbers on the bolt and bolt carrier group don't match up. Now I'm not an expert on SVD's but something about this seems, at the least, a little less than genuine. Is it possible this thing could be cobbled together for a few thousand or so and restored or is there a remote chance that everything this guy claims is accurate? Interested in opinions on this one as this offering really made me scratch my head.

well the guy is also selling a wood set for almost $600...
the numbers not matching would be an issue for me also.
Meh, the same rifle was sold from a seller in North Carolina last year around $7,000 if memory serves me correct. The dude waited a year and threw a different sales pitch hoping for someone to take the bait.
That gun was illegally smuggled back from Iraq most likely by a US Soldier. I have seen them before... stay far away from it if you like your freedom
Iraqi property stamp:

As I understand it, if it's a real honest to god SVD and not a Tigr, then there are only 15 or 20 in the country. Which would make it expensive, but again because there are so few the serial numbers are well documented and when sold they go for 7 to 10k, maybe 15k if it's one of the really really nice ones with matching numbers.
I honestly hate GB for how high most of the items are. Do people really fall for that stuff? I've only found a couple things on there (full gun) that was a good deal.

That would be my guess as well...

I bought a Kassnar on GB for under $950 so deals can be found once in a while. I let the seller know about the Iraqi property stamp. We'll see if it gets yanked.

Close.
I passed on it for $4800 local FTF sale. At the time it had chicom wood along w/a JJJ scope. With all the legal questions going back and forth on the akforum I ended up passing. The seller confirmed that he had it stashed away for 10 years, and the guy he bought it from was possibly the one to bring it back from overseas but he was unsure. The previous owner had it stashed in the attic for about 10 years which puts it around 90-92 timeframe. The seller I was dealing with then relisted it and it sold to a NR Gunbroker buyer out of CT for $5500.
Some guys over on the forum said the act itself was illegal but not the possession, then there were those that said it was to hot to handle and to stay away. What scared me is that the original seller did not want to transfer it through a FFL which was required since we were in neighboring states. He also did not want to exchange any ID's or provide any BOS. I realize its not a requirement, but I was just doing it for peace of mind.
I spoke to the current seller Apache Arms about the history on this SVD as he stated he was unclear about its origin etc. He seemed like a nice guy but he's reaching a bit on the price I would say...

Not necessarily illegal, there were some brought back to the states by the Army that are legal and have the proper paperwork. One of those sold on GB about a year ago for something like $15k. It had copies of the paperwork in the auction.
Story goes something like 10 were brought back to the states, with some of them being released to the public.

Highly doubtful on an SVD. Though I did personally see a guy bring back a Persian Mauser through the legal channels in Iraq, it was given to him legitimately by a sheik as a sign of good faith. Did ATF import paper, BDE Commander even signed off on it.

It's legit, heres the guy who bought it and has the paperwork. Old thread now, so pics and all don't work anymore.

There are rich gun owners that just have to have whatever they feel like.

First thing I thought of....
I can neither confirm nor deny that I might have seen a similar one a few years back.
Most of the Hungarian Mosin snipers were brought in from Canada illegally. They are couple of them now Gunbroker and even the seller advertisement says "no -import" marked
that is just an insane amount of money
he also claims he has a letter from the AFT that this is legal. If so why would he not post this in his ad - just wondering
You guys and your speculating...whatever. It's a nice rifle and I want one, not anywhere near that price though and I doubt very much he will get close to that price.
This rifle sold not too long ago and by a local guy. If I didn't have my head up my ass that week, I would have seriously considered it:

Boxed with all accessories for $13k. Doesn't get any better than that.
It's nice but definitely not worth that price tag. I had a 1979 one in my possession for two months about half a year ago. It was hard parting with that rifle

Use your head. GB is a listing service - they don't set prices. Prices are set by the sellers. Hate the sellers, not GB. A sharp buyer can get a deal there if he is patient. Obviously there is a lot of B.S. in some of the listings and also some outright fraud, but these are things done by the sellers, not the listing service. There is no reason to expect the gun community to suddenly become truthful and honest because they're now selling on-line, thereby breaking traditions of hundreds of years.

Those of us who are questioning it have seen these in Iraq, just like it, from the same date period, with the same odd proof marks on the receiver. I do not believe his story for a second, it's just a fairytale.
