MAK 90 aftermarket furniture questions (slant cut)
Hello, I have a nice MAK with an angle cut reciever. I want to put new furniture on it. I Like the MI handguards with modular rails. Question is what stock and PG can I get that are black to match and run without a gap b/n the stock and receiver?
Any help is appreciated.
Ironwoods is the only company that makes a buttstock to match the slant cut receiver. However, you will have to dye the wood in the color of your choice, as they dont do any staining, & deliver their product unfinished. GARY N4KVE
I though lt so. Guess maybe a very dark black stain might set it off right. Wish the "woodpile section" was back up on the sight. Part of me likes the purists look of the wood. But I like the railed modular handguard from MI. Oh well.
Being a milled Chinese receiver, the Chinese ak junkies like me drool over the milled mak's in wood furniture. You kinda got a collectors item there, and should show it off how it should be in original (ish) wood.
But, I'd say do ironwood, and paint it black with an epoxy paint. It would then have the durable finish of plastic. Unfortunately, that slant cut makes buying furniture a bit annoying.
Somebody with a metal shop could make a bit of coin selling gap fillers.....
Here is a MAK 90 slant cut i did with a set of Iron Woods stock sets.I refinished it in Amber Shellac.

I'm not sure his is Milled. Milled MAK's have a double angle cut, but I think he has a stamped straight angle cut. Either way, options are limited.
You are correct sir; I have the stamped Mak 90. If I buy a whole IWD set then I will go the classic look.
If someone had an old stock from IWD's woodpile for sale I would go the other route (black, MI slick modular HG's, surefire 961, and a red dot).
Stupid slant cut.
I used a polymer stock set from Kvar and after some JB Weld, alot of sanding, and some Alumahyde II matte black I got this.
If I had to do it over again, I would have used the Warsaw Pact length stock but I am pretty happy with how it turned out.
I've always wanted to get one of those and turn it into an underfolder. The slant looks right for a chicom underfolder.

Where did you get the adapter to mate the slant cut receiver with the normal buttstock? GARY N4KVE

There isn't any adapter. I just sanded down the kvar stock until it slid in to the thicker Chinese receiver and then once it was in as far as it would go, used JB Weld epoxy to fill in the gap on the sides and bottom of the stock. I had to put the goop on, let it harden, put more in, let it harden, repeat until it was flush and then sanded it until it was smooth . Then I painted it with Brownell's Alumahyde II.

Functionally, the slant cut on the MAK doesn't matter at all. I guess the look bothers some folks (not me). Many of the "fixes" to the slant cut look 10 times worse than the slant gap did to begin with!

Actually, If you use a AR15 style collapsible buffer-type stock, the slant is barely noticeable and more or less blends in with most designs.
If the slant cut look really bugs you, you can try one of these adapters for the VEPR, which has an even more pronounced slant, and file it to size. It should fit since the VEPR uses a 1.5 mm thick receiver, close to a MAK's 1.6 mm. Looks like it would be a hell of a lot of work, but I'm sure it's worth it to some:

The other alternative is to send me all of your unwanted slant-cut MAKs. I'll give them a good home, I promise!

With black polymer, the gap is much less noticeable than with a wood stock. However, from the looks of it, I don't see a lot of difference between this and the usual method of just mounting a regular straight black polymer stock on without the excess sanding, etc. –– you've still got that "hump" on either side of the stock, unless you were to sand the hump down and smooth it out further down the stock. Seems like a lot of work to me, but then I'm more of a function over form guy.
My offer still stands: if you don't like your slant-cut MAKs, just send them to me and I'll take good care of them!
