Hey I'm looking at getting my first and or second AK. I live in stupid ass CT, so I can't get an AK-47. I'll have to live with an AK-74. Not that it's a bad thing to have a 74. I'm just looking for info on what 74s are good, crap or awesome. I'm a noob ( in AK land, I've got 5 ARs plus other rifles) so any help would be great.

How is there a legality difference between a 47 and a 74 in CT?

I'm only into AK-47's myself, but from what I always read, the Bulgarian 74's are top of the line, and I also know that the Arsenal (Saiga) SGL-31's are up there with the best that money can buy.
Both can be had from Atlantic Firearms (site advertiser here) for good prices. I've heard nothing but great feedback from people regarding doing business with Atlantic.
I've even seen them get in here and reply to threads where members were posting about a complaint with a gun they'd bought from Atlantic (thinking that they were likely stuck with dealing with it on their own), and Atlantic would come on here and say "hey why didn't you just say something to us? We'll take care of you, no problem. Call us for an RMA and we'll get it done ASAP or replace it for you".
Never seen another company go out of their way to take care of a customer like that before. Pretty impressive IMO.

Anyways, whatever your choice winds up being, you'd better get after it ASAP cause the prices are going up daily right now.

If i recall, CT banned the 7.62x39mm cartridge, not the gun

If CT banned 7.62x39, then why does Cabela's in CT sell metric shit tons of it?

That just shows you how F'in stupid CT is. You can have an AK-74 or a mini-30. But not an AK-47. CT AWB bans the AK-47 by name. Just like COLT AR-15.

They ban the AK-47? Then get an AKM or AMD-65

If it has inter-changeable parts with an AK-47 it's banned. This state sucks!!

For buy and ready to go, I love my SLR-105 that I bought for my dad. For build your own, or have built, I prefer a good 1980s Russian parts kit build. Can't beat it.

The AK-74 also has a lot of parts that interchange with the AK-47. Sounds to me like you might want to research your state's firearm laws, just to be on the safe side.
