Fair price for Cheetah (Zimbabwe) 7.62x39?
Hey,
I ran into a local fella that has a small quantity of Cheetah 7.62x39 which he says was imported from Zimbabwe. Any of you guys ever heard of it?
He says it's brass, non-corrosive, has Berdan primers, is accurate and it's just very good stuff all around. He also said it's real scarce to non-existent these days as it can't be imported to the US anymore for some reason and he expects it to sell fast once he posts it on a few forums.
Is he blowing (gun)smoke or is it good stuff?
Also, what would be a "reasonable" price for a box of 40?
Thanks,
10yrs ago, it was my favorite 7.62x39 blasting ammo since it was cheap and easy to reload with my berdan equipment. Very consistant on the chrono, too. IIRC, the factory in Zimbabwe used Chinese equipment to manufacture it. Wish it was still imported...especially at the old prices. :)
I bought a 1440rd case about 6 months ago for $275, which I thought was a better than average price at the time. I wouldn't pay more than $10 for 40 rounds.
Its decent stuff but from the way the guy is describing the ammo it sounds like he is going to want alot for it.

Used to use it alot, a shame it's gone now.

We haven't talked price yet. I told him before we talked money I'd like to look around a bit and see what it was going for. He asked me to print out what I found because he said he has been looking for current prices and has had no luck.
And I really can't find any prices on it either. I think he will ask a fair and reasonable price. He is well liked at the range I go to and seems like a gpod guy. I don't think he's out to make a killing on it. he's just trying to find out what the current market for it might be.
He did say he got it pretty cheap but it was years ago and he was sure it's worth somewhat more today that it was then. And from the sound of things, it probably is.
So far we have one guy who says he wouldn't pay anymore than $10 per box. Would that be a fair and reasonable price? More than $10? Less than $10?
As I said, I don't think he's out to make a killing and I'm not out to rob him for it so any other opinions on the price for a box of $40 will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
I would guess about 40 cents/rd., $16.00/box of 40. I think that's probably about market for brass case, non-corrosive and copper-jacketed lead-core bullet.

I would go 30 cents/rd, 40 is way too high for 7.62x39. $12-13 a box would be a good price.
I have a few thousand rounds if it, it's my favorite ammo. Point of impact is 3-4" higher at 50 yds than the current Russian import so it is loaded hotter. I still have an unopend case of 1440 I got from Vector years ago. I think I paid something like $129 for the case.
$0.30 to 0.40 around is a good price. If you can get it for $0.25 a round that would be a great price.
I bought some surplus yugo ammo before ammoman.com sold out of it for $.24 per round, IIRC. I'd say if you pay a few cents
per round in either direction of what it will cost you for current production ammo, delivered to your house, it's fair for both of you.
I remember "Cheetah" brand. Yes it is brass case and non-corrosive. It is good stuff and you should have no problem with performance. It was imported by Vector but is no longer being imported. It didn't sell very well and remained "on the shelf" for a long time (IIRC) for two reasons;
1) It cost a little more than Chinese and Russian imports of the time and most shooters opted to save $20-$30 per thousand. That was a BIG savings when you could by a 1000 round case of 7.62x39 for as little as $70.
2) Presumably, the proceeds from the commercial sale of this stuff went to support the Dictator of Zimbabwe -Robert Mugabe's pogrom against White farmers, starving the entire population in the process. You probably don't hear much about it because the U.N. and Hollywood elitists hate White Africans so much that their deaths are excusable.
ETA- Fair Price? I dunno, I would probably be willing to pay $.25/round but no more. I am still sitting on a metric buttload of South African 7.62x39 so I am not really in the market for anymore "premium" ammo. I shoot Barnaul for my range fodder.
I remember shooting some years ago and prices were obviously much lower on ammo then. It was good but with the escalation of prices and the plethora of ammo on the market, I'd say get it if you want and pay what you're comfortable with. Personally I'd be comfortable with something in the $.25 per round range.
