Hey All,

I'm new to the site. I have an EAA Saiga IZ132 (7.62x39),

I'm curious about standard surplus mags or SAIGA specific mags.

I'd like to get some feedback about what are the pro-cons of either adding a "feed ramp" to the trunnion in order to use surplus mags, or should I just stick with the Saiga specific mags?

you can get surplus mags for cheap. I say add the bullet guide and file the mag catch.

ETA: and welcome to the site!

+1 to what nictra said. as long as you dont add any other evil features you really dont have to worry about 922r either. good high cap saiga mags like surefire are expensive. bullet guides are easy to make/install. and surplus ak mags are cheap plentiful and reliable. also filing the mag catch down is a cinch with a dremel and a cut off wheel.

eta: i have one of the early eaa import rifles that im about to do a conversion on. its a pretty simple process especially with all of the kits available.

I understand that adding the feed ramp makes it so I can use surplus mags. Do the surplus mags have to be modified to fit my Saiga after I add the feed ramp, or will standard AK mags fit at that point?

My thinking is that I add the feed ramp and surplus mags will work without modification. The mags that will have to be modified are the factory Saiga mags by filing the catch is that right?

I'm looking for the solution that makes it so I can pick up any AK mag lying in the street (literally), used pop it in and go. Will the feed ramp mod make that true?

feed ramp and slight mod to the existing mag catch yes.

I've done the bullet guide install one 4 of my Saigas. Best price is from Carolina Shooters Store. On my 7.62x39 rifles the original Saiga mags still work. You file down the mag catch a bit at a time to get surplus mags to fit in. On 7.62x39 rifles, Thermold mags will function without a bullet guide installed. They are inexpensive usually. They must have the same height on the front portion as the OEM Saiga mag.
