I have an ORF bulgy build which i love. It came with a tapco black plastic stock. What is the difference between this and the k-var stocks that everyone raves about.? should i switch? is it worth the $80???
thanks

Since you already have tapco set I would not pay for the K-Var. If you have neither, then I would buy the K-var.

I've had both and when you are holding the stock in your hand, you can definitely tell the difference. The K-Var stock is better. however, when they are attached to the rifle the difference is a lot less noticeable. If you already have the Tapco stock and don't have any complaints then I would recommend that you just stick with that.

I have a GP1975 that came with a Tapco stock set and I have another AK with the K-var set.

The K-var set is made much better and looks great. The Tapco set works but looks like crap and the lower handguard sucks donkey balls.

If you can just replace one thing then replace that lower handguard with the K-var one.

Next will be that pistol grip. The grip from Hogue feels better than holding your own johnson. I recommend that one.

it's hard to eff up a polymer AK stock, either will be fine. the foregrip w/ heat shield from kvar is tits, though.

I'm not sure why Tapco has a bad rap, everything I've had from them was sturdy if not pretty. I might buy something else for a few bucks extra, but if you've already got Tapco there's not much reason to change.

I have had both The tapco is cheaper but inferior. It has no stoage area for a cleaning kit. I would look for a used Kvar stock in the EE.

Do the guys who bitch about not having storage space actually use their buttstock cleaning kit to clean their rifles?

Or is it one of those 'the russians have a buttstock cleaning kit so I want one' things?

The importance of that space is overblown anyway. Everyone knows chicks dig folding stocks MORE, and they don't have the cleaning kit space.

The front tang area of the tapco stock that inserts into the receiver is also thinner and not as thick as the k-var stocks. The shape of the tapco stock is not exactly the same as the k-var and looks odd on some rifles.

Actually, yes I do. The cleaning kit is also great for range use if you get a stuck case or to swab the bore before leaving.

Thanks for the help fellas. I am not a must have a cleaning kit guy. actually if you unscrew thetapco butt plate you can put all kinds of things like batteries, cleaning kit and anything else that floats your boat in there in a ziplock. I was curious about the stock' strength though. I'm not someone who will ever see real combat or field use , but I do appreciate stuff that is the most durable and if one stock can smash more things than another- I want the sturdy smasher. also - I like the more authentic look of the K-var. just not sure if its worth the extra $

I have never used my cleaning kit to clean my rifle, however, in a SHTF situation I don't have to keep a cleaning kit in the rest of my gear because ... there is one in the rifle.

There normal style butt-stock isn't that bad. A buddy of mine has one on his wasr-10 and it functions fine. It doesn't seem flimsy at all once it is installed. The Galil hand guards are a joke though. I haven't used their "saw" grip or whatever but it seems to be pretty popular.
