I'd get a 7.62x39 AK, if you want even cheaper ammo. Check out www.atlanticfirearms.com

ETA: 5.45 ammo is even cheaper than 7.62, but that is bound to dry up eventually.

+1

a 5.45x39 ak is the best deal going right now as far as ammo goes.

a 7.62x39 ak is in second place.

Polish Tantal.
If you need help finding a really good quality one IM me and I will hook you up with the SOTs contact Info that builds them. Mine was a like new kit. He built it up, then reparked, then moly coated it in HK Black. It is beautiful. Puts any other Tantals I have seen to shame.

Build your own in 5.45x39

Here is a Polish Tantal

Or if you like a more traditional wood stock,

Here is a Bulgarian AK74

Both were built on NDS Receivers

It's a piece of cake if you have any mechanical skills, and patience

I bought the kit through Jenny at Ohio Rapid Fire

Look for an SLR105 Shawn, preferably an A1 or A1R they can still be had for decent prices.

This is my answer to the problem of cheap ammo:

OK, not an AK, but still cheaper.

Start with getting a mill and a lathe and a set of gauges.

j/k

If you already have the barrel you need a AR barrel extension. And the tools.

But since this is a thread hijack after all, do a search on the AR-15 section for 5.45 barrels and read the 15 page thread on the building of these upper.

Not so bad. Chrome bore, SS gas tube, mostly aluminum upper and lower. Pretty easy to clean, just have to take a little extra time with the bolt and carrier.

Most of the corrosion is seen under the FSB near the gas port on the new steel bushings, I should really finish the park job and coating.

No, it's double stack. It doesn't have the required parts yet so I only use a US made 5rnd mag
