I hope this hasn't been beaten to death here, but are there restrictions for ordering magazines from a foreign country?

This is questionable, but I would not call it "importing", but rather "buying" mags from over-seas. Only Importers can "import" magazines, as they have Importer Licenses, and are usually buying in quantity.

I live in a state that allows high cap mags, and have ordered some rare mags from over-seas a few times with no problems. The mags came disassembled into their three components alog with some definition documentation for customs. There is always the risk of customs confiscating the shipment, so don't make a large order. Just order an amount you can handle loosing.

There is a Voluntary Restraint Agreement between Russia and the US. Russia has agreed not to export military equipment to the US. AK magazines are military equipment under the agreement. If customs in either country discover the magazines they will be confiscated.
Also you need clearance to import any weapons parts if the value of the parts in the shipment is more than $100.

Most of the mags that you can buy online come from Ukraine. And from what ive been hearing the Ukraine customs has really tightened down in the last few months and they are getting harder and harder to get out.
