This might sound incredibly obvious, but: Some, probably most AKs will run fine with HP ammo, and a very few will choke on it to varying degrees. The ones that do choke can often have the feed ramp clearanced a bit so that they will feed HPs with no problem. The real question is: Do you want to modify your pre-ban PTK rifles? I personally would not, and would just stick to FMJ ammo in them. You can always blast your HP ammo out of another AK. Don't have another one (yet)? Sounds like a good excuse to pick one up!

Exactly. Some AKs will not feed HP ammo 100%. A simple fix is to create a "feed ramp". I had this happen with a Chinese AK and a AK pistol build using a Romy "G" kit.
You never know if HPs are the only ammo you might have access to some day, so making your rifle run on whatever is available is a good idea. Every other AK I have or had run just fine on HPs.

A Friends Norinco did the same thing, so I modified the feed ramp as previously mentioned. No problems since.

You may also want to compare the sitting angle of chicom mags to what you are using, as they may sit lower in back to create a higher exit angle for the round.

Do not modify the rifle by cutting feedramps, especially if you don't know what you are doing. Are the rifles preban?

Many Chinese rifles have been reported to not function well with HP SP ammo. FMJ is best. I wouldn't be modifying a preban Chinese rifle to feed HP/SP ammo if you are unable to get replacement barrels if you screw up the rifle and it is a high dollar preban. Better off using ammo that works or selling the rifles for a profit and buying a rifle that feeds anything than risking the value of a rifle if it is a preban in my opinion.

Soooooooo, What is the best ammo in FMJ to buy at this time?? I guess I need 2-3k and have been dsappointed with Wolf FmJ accuracy. Although the Mil classic H.p. was an improvement.... I guess I can spend up to $200 per thousand so forget Lapua or "S & B". Any advice would be appreciated. And thanks everybody so much for the H.P. info. It would of been my SHTF ammo and a jam would be quite embarrasing at the worst possble time!!

You want Golden Tiger!! You might want to stock up on a couple K of it. Bryan from AIM has said that 7.62x39 prices are going to go up in the near future due to Russian ammo plants being awarded military contracts.

I've used Wolf, Silver Bear, Brown Bear, the old TCW (Tula Catridge Works) with no issues. Rifles like SAR-1s will eat just about any ammo though.

I like silver bear for two reasons, its made by barnaul and it has no lacquer to melt when hot.

I've used both with great results. You probably won't go wrong with either, but I think Golden Tiger is generally the cheaper of the two for now. It just went up ten buck per K, but is still a good deal at site sponsor

I wouldn't worry about lacquer coated ammo in a commie rifle, they were made for each other.

I would also like to see this. Any help would be appreciated. My current Norinco has no problem with HP's but I have a MAK on the way so I would love to have all my bases covered.
