Is 5.45mm Barnul corrosive ?
Is 5.45mm Barnul corrosive ?
Only the N76 .mil surplus is corrosive AFAIK.
Thanks
that's what I thought.
Friend of mine said he had some he'd sell me.
I have some older Barnaul 5.45 that might be corrosive primed. This was some of the first imported, say around 1994-1995. I have not done any formal testing to confirm simply because it is of no real problem if it is, but here is what happened: I ran a thousand rounds of Wolf 5.45 through my new AK without any cleaning, just to see how reliable it would be. I would fire 200-250 rounds per session over the course of about 6 months and put it back in the gun safe. Never a speck of rust anywhere after the run of 1K rounds. So, to replace the Wolf, I bought several cases of Barnaul that was new on the market. Did the same thing with the Barnaul. After taking the rifle out a month or so later after the first range session, I noticed light rust on the muzzle brake. I broke the rifle down and discovered the gas tube was very fuzzy with rust. I thought that maybe it was more humid than usual, since it is relatively dry here. Same thing happened some months later... Traded some of this ammo to a friend because he needed some to test a new build. Rusted his gas tube as well... At least some of the early lots might be corrosive, but I suspect that any recent manufacture is OK.

Red/Green Barnaul 30 round boxes are N/C (5.45mm). This applies to the SP, HP & FMJ. None of which has been imported for the past two or three years. Dunno if we'll see it again or not, been a while. FWIW, the 55 grain HP Chrono'd out of my friend's Tantal at 3150 fps (muzzle). All I know is it sure blows shit up .............
