Whats Norinco Yellow Box 7.62x39 Ammo Worth?
I bought a MAK 90 a few months back and it came with 3 boxes of Norinco Yellow Box Non-Corrosive Steel Case Ammo.
A guy I work with was wanting to buy it and I was wondering what it is worth?

About $4-$5 per box. Lead core, nothing special.

I thought it would have been worth a little more than regular wolf ammo.
I would have thought since you cant buy chinese ammo anymore it would be worth more than something you can buy everyday.
Arent these steel core?
No. Lead core. Common ammo. Just because it is no longer importable does not make it more valuable.

Hmm, odd. Cause i just took a round of Norinco 7.62x39 out of the same kind of yellow boxes in the picture and cut one open. As far as i know lead does not stick to magnets.
It's impossible to tell anything about Chinese made ammunition by the packaging (and that includes whether the primer is corrosive or not).
The Chinese didn't really care what the package said, and probably couldn't read it even if they did.
OP what are the headstamp markings on those cartridges?

True. I have several silver boxes that have a silver sticker with "Steel Core" printed on it covering up the lead core part. Common sense would say someone tried to make it look like and sell it as the more valuable stuff. But the font and colors are exact which probably means it was done at the factory and the bullets are indeed steel core norincos.
Box color means nothing with Chinese 7.62x39mm. I have examples of both steel core and lead core being packed in yellow boxes, wether the box itself is marked steel core, lead core or not specified.
The headstamp on these cartridges is "311 91" as you can see in the picture. All of the "311" from the 1990's that I have examined (91-94) have had lead cores.
If you have any doubts, pull a bullet. Boattailed it will be steel core. Flat based it will be lead core. You never know for sure with the Chinese, so we all might be surprised with what you find...

I can't tell the headstamp from the picture, which is why I asked.
Pull a bullet and check the length. If I remember correctly, steel core Chinese has a bullet length > 1 inch. Lead core < 1 inch.
I have had yellow boxes with both steel and lead and corrosive as stated . I have even had some Chinese .223 labeled as non-corrosive that corroded up a rifle
Agreed with the above, I had and have examples of both in yellow boxes, some steel, some not, some Norinco boxes are clearly marked steel core, some not.
You don't know unless you pull the round, as the jacket is steel, and that will draw a magnet.
To be sure, section a round.
And, steel core Norinco is not "Armor Piercing" as in the core is not hardened or something harder, like tungsten. That said I have seen accounts of it going through both door panels of a car, and going out the other.
On soft armor either will penetrate, but when you get to Level 4, with steel or ceramic inserts, most are rated for actual AP ammo.
Its of somewhat dubious value, but where the ban sucks is with cost, then, and really now, steel core ammo is much cheaper to produce.
And this:
"No. Lead core. Common ammo. Just because it is no longer importable does not make it more valuable. "
Sorry, it may not be more valuable to YOU, but the sales on Gunbroker show otherwise, its value is inherently more valuable, because their is a finite amount, that gets less every day, the basic law of supply and demand dictates that, and its just common sense to boot.
Why do you think KTW ammo goes for 10 dollars a round?
7N1 that came in at 130 dollars a case is now selling for 800 plus.
There is your opinion, and then there is provable fact.
Cases, on GB right now, are going 300 or so, or about 50% above current production, steel core, more than that.
That said, three dog eared boxes aren't going to command a great premium like a new sealed case.
In other words, yeah, they are worth SOMETHING, but you aren't going to retire on your profits.
