I used to use an AR-15/M16 chamber brush with the steel bristles clipped off.
Now I use a .222/.223 chamber brush from Brownell's.

Except for the Neck Diameter... all of the .223 Chamber Dimensions are Smaller then a 5.45x39mm.
Have the Brushes been doing a good job for you? Is there enough contact and strength in the bristles when you use them?

If you have an unlined barrel, or you just want a better fit, try the next size up, which is a 22-250 chamber.
The Brownell chamber brushes are larger diameter and made of a much stiffer bristle than bore brushes.
Good Call on the 22-250 brush. I'll look into that. Hell I may even have one in my Gun Smith box... Tons of gun related tools I forget I even have... an assortment of chamber brushes and everything.
I use the 22 pistol brush to clean. the 223 seems a bit too snug. I also had great luck with using the 22 bore snake and oh yah lots of Hoppes' Number 9 solvent. Then lightly dress up the barrel and gas tube for storage with whatever gun oil I have.
