OIl/Grease.
What's an easy way to get the packing grease off of a brand new rifle?
If I get something that has lots of cosmoline on it I usually use WD-40 and lots of paper towels.
Kerosene works. Simple Green works if its warm.
Probably the easiest method is to buy a couple of cans of a "gun scrubber" type spray cleaner/degreaser.
First make SURE it won't harm the finish, then field strip the rifle and use the spray to flush out the gunk.
Don't get it on the wood.
Allow to dry completely, then spray everything down with a spray lubricant like CLP Breakfree or Rem-Oil to re-lubricate and prevent rust.
Another, slower and messier method is to buy a gallon of cheap paint thinner and use brushes to wash everything out.
non-chlorinated brake cleaner
Diesel fuel is cheap, less flammable, and not likely to turn your kids in mutant flesh eating zombies. Easy to get too. BSW

Answer was so good I had to post it twice!

Same here.
Be sure to apply a CLP-type product afterwards as brake cleaner will remove most/all protective oils.
What kind of rifle is it? Anything harsh can and will take the finish right off with the grease if it is one of the painted AKs.
LSA works good.
Believe it or not the best product I've ever used was this stuff:

Depends on the paint. But I see your subtle dig at Arsenal.

simple green, cheap and non-toxic.
Just dissemble rifle and put it in the dishwasher. Works for me on all guns that I have bought full of grease.
The dishwasher will smell for a few cycles and you will have t o remove the top tray. Make sure to oil all the parts down afterward.

The grease will clog your lines when the water cools. I would not recommend this.
THe good people at the mosin nagant forum would say to avoid chemicals (which isn't a bad idea for any rifle, C&R or not) and to put it in a hot, soapy bath and continue to pour super hot water over it repeatedly. But like the dishwasher, your wife will kill you and you may put some hard core clogging to your pipes. Some people will put it in a metal garbage can with a string of high wattage light bulbs and simply sweat the cosmoline off. THrowing it in your oven on 200 degrees or something low like that for a few hours (with foil to catch drippings). ALso, just shoot it alot and bring some cleaners with you to the range and scrub it while it's hot...or at least do this after your first attempt to de-cosmo it when there's just some minor residue. Mosin Nagant rifles get "sticky bolt" if there's even a little cosmo in the action.

Use the dishwasher AFTER a good scrubbing/bath with mineral spirits then CLP or Ed's Red everything. Heating in the oven on lowest setting is good for prep before mineral spirits as it gets the cosmo juicy.
