Bakelite Refinish
Bakelite is new to me, how does one go about renewing decade old bakelite with scratches? I have a pistol grip coming that I would like to refinish as well as the bottom piece of my PSL grip. Couldnt find anything on Google.
Use the same method for polishing scratches out of the clear coat on a car.
For deep scratches, use very fine wet or dry type sand cloth to remove the scratch. Don't try to totally remove deep scratches or you'll leave "dished-out" spots in the Bakelite.
After scratch removal, use any good plastic polish to polish out the fine scratches and restore the original shine of the material. Don't make them shine like a mirror. Use a coarse cloth like blue jean material with the polish.
If you try to use power buffing equipment, use a plastic polish and be careful, to much pressure will melt the Bakelite, making melted areas on the surface.
Best to polish by hand.
You can use many metal polishes, which list plastics on the label, or you can buy good plastic polishes in most automotive stores, where they sell them for polishing headlights.
