Cleaning Muzzle Break
What is the best way to clean a 74 muzzle break after shooting 7N6 ammo?
On both my Bulgarian 74 and Tantal, the muzzle break seems impossible to get clean. I wash it with Windex and hot water when I finish shooting. I soak it with Hoppes while I clean the rest of the gun. I usually use over 20 Qtips on them and they still come out black. The Russian surplus is some dirty stuff, but it sure shoots well.
Thanks
I usually don't worry about getting in spotless. After shooting corrosive ammo I use either Ballistol-water or Mpro7 to get rid of any corrosive residue. I dry it and then hit it with CLP.
Break-Free foaming bore cleaner will get more stuff off the brake than Ballistol or CLP. I usually use the foam every 300 rounds or so on the bore. While I have it out I hit the gas tube, brake, and piston with foam too.
EG brake after Break-Free bore foam.

Ballistol/water is always a good solution.
As Brian said, don't obsess about getting your muzzle brake spotless, just worry about leaching out the salts.
It can be as simple as an old toothbrush and hot soapy water under the bathroom sink then a light re-oiling after rinsing out the soap.
the hot water is the trick for the corrosive salts. but you are correct on muzzle breaks you get a hard black sooty looking build up that even scrubbing doesn't seem to help. i keep an old pot around with matching lid with brake cleaner from autozone in it. i used it it to soak small parts. it works great. the lid is a must due to odor.
Thanks, does the brake cleaner harm the finish?

It shouldn't, unless it's a cheap finish. In which case, a can of GunKote will fix it right up.

Brake cleaner is a great solvent for oil, not so good for baked on carbon. It's just not going to do that much.

i used to use carb cleaner which is meant for carbon build up. the brake cleaner works better.

Try some Odorless Mineral Spriits if you want to dunk a part. You can buy it at almost any hardware store or even Wal-Mart. You can even filter and re-use it.
I appreciate all the great advice.
