 Installing gas tube lever

A buddy of mine bought an SGL21 a while back. The gas tube lever was really tight and he used pliers to move it. The pliers marred the finish and he's freaking out about it. I told him to not worry about it or to just get some flat black paint and touch it up. He wants to replace it. I looked into it and I guess you have to peen it in place. Wouldn't that also mar the finish or at the very least run a good risk of it? I told him I'm pretty sure he would be risking messing up the finish on one side to replace a part that he's replacing because of the finish.

Have to admit, I don't know what finish is used on those. But it really depends on what that finish is. If parkerized then no marker is going to fix it. If blued Oxpho Blue works pretty good. In the end, it's an AK variant it's supposed to have signs of wear, tear and abuse. Tell your friend to give that one to me and go buy another.

The end of the lever that will be staked will probably get a little finish wear. As stated above a little touch up paint or cold blue would cover it up when he is done.

The problem is though if he overdrives the flange he may still have the same problem if not worse. LOL.

How bad is a little finish wear? The part that he wants fixed isn't really messed up. It's just scratched. I told him I'll do it, but I can't guarantee that it won't just be messed up on that side. If we're going to go the cold blue route, I'd rather just fix the side that's scratched.

Tell him stop being such a girl, suck it up Fances, other such insults and touch it up. Paint it. Im sure what ever he is shooting at will look at him and think, "Mmmm I think that gas tube lever has a scratch on uuuugggghhhhhh, ouch dammit, arrrrg!!!"
