Bulgarian ak74 kits and new barrels.
Just ordered 2 bulgarian kits along with 2 new bulgarian ak74 barrels. The barrels are already cut for pins. What are the odds these will headspace and everything line up correctly? Any one here do a similer build?
Even if you have to drill the barrel pin oversize it isn't a hard thing to do.

I bought 2 of the '74 kits with Bulgy barrels from Whatacountry a few months ago. Both ended up being dead on.
Note that both were checked with my 5.45x39 Go and No-Go gauges from AK-builder. There is no way I would shoot a rifle that hadn't been properly headspaced with real tools. I keep oversize pins and the proper ream for those that don't line up. Mine just so happened to be surprisingly correct.
The tape-and-empty-bullet method for headspacing is NOT good enough. My first build was a Maadi '47 that I cobbled together with tools that I had. I tried this method. Later on when I had real 7.62x39 headspace gauges I rechecked the headspacing. It was no where near correct. The bolt would easily close on the No-Go. I have since torn that build down, replaced the components I screwed up, and re-headspaced with an oversize pin.
Spend the money on the tools. They will be easy to cash out here on the EE. You will lose about 20% of their value, but have a safe rifle to show for it.
I plan on using gauges. I just hope they will be close enough i dont have problems with rear sight block and gas block.

I doubt it would be off enough to change the placement of the other parts. With my (limited) experience, headspacing usually doesn't change by more than a few thousands.
Before I actually purchased the Head Space Guages I used to get a bullet and take off the slug and then dump all the powder out and trial fit the shell in the gun and test the fit that way to make sure it was not to tight or loose... if it locked on the empty shell Id fire it and see if the cap popped out of the shell or if it stayed level with the back of the shell... thus hinting if its to tight the cap will blister or move out of the shell, this would give me a hint of the space... then trial fit many rounds just with the firing pin removed to make sure I wouldn't put one tru my home... I will tell you the Headspace gauges are worth the price but this is the method I used on my first build and then waited to test with the correct gauges before I tested a true live round....I have a steel mag with nothing but fired blanks with the slug attached and superglued on the shell to test the action and since its the only original mag (Rest are Tapco or Promags) used for test purposes I can't make a mistake....I never keep live ammo or loaded mags on my table other then the one steel mag with 30 blanks to make sure no accidents will happen.

I just received a new Bulgy barrel for a build I am going to do. Did you notice and chipping of the chrome at the crown of your barrels? Mine has some pronounced chips. I'd post a photo, but having trouble.
Mine shipped today, will let ya know when get em.
I've had a few that appear to line up after checking head space with gauges, in fact, the factory pin will go in and it seems to still pass the head space go and no go test. Listen to what duck says carefully, don't use a Bubba method for checking head space, use gauges. My opinion, with a trunnion and barrel that haven't been drilled and reamed as brand new virgin parts, even if they appear to line up, I still will ream to .300 and pin to .302. I will not take chances on something that could potentially ruin some ones day or life.

These are not new barrels, they are take offs that have been refinished, you may have gotten one that has been used more than others. From what I've read here and on other forums, Atlantic is very customer friendly, if your displeased with it, get in touch with them and request an other one.
Got em today. Barrels look good, no damage to report.
Atlantic told me to send it back and they would make sure I got a good one
