Technically not building it myself, but I want to buy a Saiga .223 and have it converted. I know I need a parts kit from Apex, but is there a company out there that I can send the rifle and the parts kit to in order to have it converted to a traditional AK-74? Thanks.

It depends on whether or not you want true bulgarian parts, or just a clone. To use surplus bulgarian parts off of apex, you will need to turn down the barrel to a smaller OD and machine in all of the notches and grooves to fit the hardware. Depending on how much a gunsmith will charge to do this is whether or not it will be worth it. Or you can make a clone with bolt on lower HG retainer and the other parts to complete the look. I am actually doing this exact thing as we speak on a .223 saiga. I have already pulled the barrel and will be turning it down to a 74 profile so that I can use all surplus bulgarian parts.

Yes, Impact Guns proudly display their conversions calling them builds. I'm sure there are others that do the same thing. There are also those willing to do the conversion for you that aren't part of an official store/company.

Great responses, thank you. So, you're saying I can contact Impact Guns, send them the Saiga plus the parts kit from Apex, and they will convert it? That's mainly what I'm looking for, a company that will do that.

I don't know for sure if they will do that. I just know they were very proud of their conversions at a gun show and were claiming they were builds. The mighty dollar makes all things possible. I'm sure they will do it for some sort of price. The question is, do you want to pay that price? Contact them and see for sure. There is a small chance they'll say no, but most likely won't.

Try JBI Armory.com
The only mill work need is for the HG retainer relief. other then that all the parts fit like butter. The receiver must be welded up and re coated to match the entire rifle or have the entire rifle blasted parked and top covered. The cool thing on the Apex kit is that you can sell the remaining parts and collect your cost of the kit back again.

You will need the kit, bullet guide, and 922R parts and 250.00 for the conversion
The first rifle is a 5.45 and the OD green is a 7.62

Here is a AK105 built from a APEX kit using a K-Var 105 barrel the other Carbine is a Draco C SBR'd.

Saiga 12 Work Bottom gun was parked and still taking oil.

The 7.62 and 5.45 rifles are easy to convert, and like you said only require a few relief cuts for the hg retainer. But he is talking about the .223 saiga, which has a larger od on the barrel and will need turned down on a lathe. Some even do it on a belt sander so they dont have to pulled it from the trunnion . The amount of material that needs to be taken off is somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/32" of the diameter, or 1/64" of the radius. Then from there, the relief cuts can be made. I have a 5.45 rifle and a .223 rifle both pulled apart as we speak, and they are both getting the bulgy 74 treatment. Though the .223 isn't going without a little persuasion.
