cleaning after each shot..new ar
im new to the ar field... just assembled my psa kit... i thought i read somewhere that you should clean the barrel after each shot the first time its taken out to the field....whats your guys take on this
Yeah, that's pretty much BS. you'll hear all sorts of different breaking in strategies. Mine is to shoot the hell out of it, then clean it.

This is what I do. Then again, I've never had a precision rifle. But I do this with all my semis. Never seemed to hurt them any.

This is a technique used to break-in a barrel if it is in an EXTREMELY accurate rifle... such as the guns used by the HRT people. Those guns will produce single-hole 10-shot patterns all day long at 100 yards, if the shooter does his part.

I never even did that with my Sako TRG, and it shoots one hole groups.
I do on every new barrel I break in . Bronze brush wet with Kroil and two-three dry patches after each of the first 10 - 15 shots . Then every 5-10 a few times .
I cant prove that it makes a difference , only because I dont have an identical rifle with an identical barrel to shoot alongside it and compare , but it certainly doesnt hurt .
The logic behind it , preached by many top shooters , gunsmiths and barrel makers , certainly makes sense , and I'm not rich enough to try and prove them wrong .
People all the time rave about one hole groups that they get from filthy barrels and un-kept rifles , that's fine . . . . really , do as you like , it's your money .
There are engines out there that have been running strong for 50k + miles on the same oil too . . . . and I'm not going that route either , thanks

Yep. Do a search. That old "breaking in " thing just wears out the barrel faster. Just more wear and tear. Read the manuals - chromed barrels don't need any "break in".
Complete waste of time, especially with a chrome- lined barrel
Who comes up with this stuff? I just don't get it.
i just bought a new ar myself and put about 150 rounds through it and then cleaned it cause i new i wouldn't be shooting for another month..but soon i will put 300 more into it..you dont have to clean it after every shot to break it in..im not even using really great ammo..

The magic break in dance has been around my whole life. In another thread Someone posted that Krieger still pushes it. More manufacturers say it's horseshit though.
My grandma used to say that drafts attracted lightening, and made us close the door and windows on the house when the summer storms rolled in.....didn't matter how much we tried to explain to her she was crazy.....

clean it, take it out, put 500 rounds or so through it, and clean it again.
break in done

Yep!
I'm a fairly new AR15 owner and I did break my weapon down and lubed it first before going to the gun range. I shot 200 rounds the first time out. Since I don't go shooting that much I clean my rifle after every trip to the range.
Built a new Spikes Barreled 14 1/2" Carbine..
Shot 80 rounds of Brass and 80 rounds of Wolf WPA today.. no cleaning till AFTER the next outing..
clean rifle when brand new after that clean when dirty. If you have a ruff finish in your bore or chamber some break in might help but you would be better off finding a higher quality barrel.

I always thought it was made up so the Fudds could have a 30 minute BS session inbetween shots...

I dont belive in breaking in a chromelined machinegun barrel !
But If I bought a high end match grade SS barrel I would follow the there advice.
My LMT M4 didnt see a bore brush until I had over 3000rds fired

I have a high-end SS match barrel made by Satern, and they recommend AGAINST break-in (specifically, the use of bore polishing compound.)

DPMS included an insert advocating cleaning between shots with NIB rifles back in '05. Don't know if they still do.
Here's my opinion on Barrel break in.
Chrome lined bore: Clean a new barrel of any manufacturing residue which it may have inside, and shoot it at least 100 rounds before cleaning again.
Non chrome lined production barrel: I clean every round for the first 10 rounds, then every 20 rounds until 100 rounds, then just normal cleaning routine. The idea is that the projectiles will burnish the bore faster if they are riding against clean steel instead of copper and powder fouling.
Hand lapped match grade barrels: Clean before shooting for the first time, then I clean after every range trip, and every 500 round or so, I clean with sweets 7.62 copper remover.
