What do you use?
What solvents and lubricants do you guys use? I am trying to learn what are the correct solvents/lubricants are to be used and on what part of my AR.
Thanks.
God Bless
I use Break Free CLP for everything, plus a dab of Lubriplate grease on the trigger/sear interface.
solvents:
hoppes #9
hoppes #9 bench rest
clp
lubes:
slip 2000ewl
clp
dow z-moly powder
aeroshell 33ms
mobil1
(different lubes for different areas/guns)
Hoppes number 9
Castrol gun lube
Most used products:
Hoppe's No.9 Nitro Solvent
Weapon Shield CLP
Weapon Shield Grease
Other preferred products on hand:
Sweets 7.62
Boretech Benchrest Blend
Break Free CLP
Break Free LP
Mil-comm TW25B
Mil-comm MC2500 LP.
I use whatever i can get for free. SHOT show was last week and I came home with enough TW25b, Machine gunners lube, Tetra Grease, and Ballistol that i wont need to buy anything for at least a year.
If I'm spending my Money i like Slip 725 as a cleaner and TW25b for a lube. But I'll use just about anything.
Solvents:
WD40 - works fine as a solvent, I don't consider it an effective lube
Penatrating Oil (various brands, work about the same)
RemOil - works fine as a solvent, I don't consider it an effective lube
Non-Chlorinated brake cleaner - not around polymer, metal only
Lubes:
Motor Oil
ATF
Bearing grease
For cleaning,
MPro-7/Hoppes Elite,
Breakfree Foaming Bore Cleaner for the bore.
Also non-chlorinated brake cleaner for spraying the big gunk off before getting to it with rags.
Sometimes Hoppes #9 or Hoppes #9 Benchrest.
For lube it's Tetra oil and grease.
I might switch to Slip2000 EWL30 and grease one day, but who knows.
I also like TW25b a lot, but it's freaking expensive and harder to find.
When at the range, or in the woods I just use the Tetra CLP stuff (so I don't have to worry about it having a bad reaction with other lubes) for cleaning and light lube and I also have a small bottle of oil and a tube of the grease in my kit.
royal purple, slip 2000, fp10
CLP, WD40 QTips and pipe cleaners and a big ass air compressor to blow all the crap out. Then wipe down with CLP.
Shooters Choice bore cleaner
Slip2000 EWL
Breakfree CLP
XF-7
Spray Moly Dry Film Lubricant
Froglube for lubing the BCG. Breakfree CLP for cleaning. I will be trying Slip2000 725 soon.
Cleaning Iron Sighted and NFA Uppers:
Breakfree Foaming Bore Cleaner to pre clean the bore and chamber
or Hoppies No 9
Solvent tank with solvent (high flash point refined mineral spirits) - if all plastic parts are off ;-)
or Autozone non-chlorinated brake cleaner
For scoped uppers
Barrett Bore Cleaner
or Shooters Choice (or Hoppies Bench Rest) alternating with Kroil
MPro-7 inside for the winter and/or careful use of brake cleaner to flush to chamber and bore.
Bolt and carrier tend to use the solvent tank or brake cleaner after pre cleaning with Hoppies No 9 or similar bore cleaner.
Note use Breakfree Foaming Bore cleaner for a quick clean, but always can get lots more carbon and copper out with the brush and patches using Barrett Bore Cleaner or Shooters Choice / Kroil, even after testing with many cleanings with FBC.
Lube
Break Free CLP for general lube
Break Free 20mm Auto Cannon Lube for contact / pressure points.
Ballistol for the bore and chamber of the match rifles, if anything
Hoppes #9 to clean the bore followed by Slip 2000 725 celaner degreaser to wash out any Hoppes residue. Then a light coat of Slip 2000 EWL down the bore.
Every thing else gets wiped down with a rag and then lubed with Slip 2000 EWL
Ballistol.
Hoppes #9 for normal bore cleaning, Kroil if the bore is really bad. I also use Shooter's Choice lead remover for my .45acp bore when I shoot lead.
Slip 2000 carbon killer to get the rest out from the gun.
And finally Militec-1 for lube.
