 zeroing ar15 300 meters or 200 yrds.

I read the military manual on this site for zeroing the AR15. The Manual indicates meters unto 300 meters or almost 1k feet, with recommended range for initial setup.
My S&W manual if you wish to call it that indicates that affective range is 200 yards or about 600 feet. Can some one guide me on which is correct? I will use this rifle for recreation but may need to depend on it for survival or defense one day and I would like to do it right.

just zero it at 50 yards and it will be about an inch high at 100 and on the money again at 200 yards from a 16" barrel. Its that simple.
