 AR-15 Short Stroke

Ok so i just built my first AR and now I'm in trouble.

So it's a Del-ton lower and 16" Del-ton Upper. 5.56x45 with a rifle length gas system. Also has a Del-ton LPK and a UTG Mil-spec buffer spring and tube. So I got 60 rounds of 55gr 5.56 and shot those first with NO problems. The next day I shot 80 rounds of 55gr .223 with all kinds of problems. My rifle was pretty much single action. I checked the gas tube, gas rings and gas key. I am stumped as of right now. I was under the impression that you could shoot .223 out of a 5.56 with no problems. I am waiting on more 5.56x45 to try that. Could my buffer spring be to stiff for my rifle? Any help please.

I had same problem with The russian stuff, it was short cycling and would not push the bolt carrier back far enough to cycle. Did the bolt remain open on the last round? If not, it is short stroking, use better grade of ammo. PMC makes mine work great.

It would not lock the bolt back but i was using Prvi Partizan M193 FMJ 5.56 the first time and then Winchester Super X .223 Brass.

Are you running a carbine spring in a rifle buffer tube or vice versa? Which buffer do you have in the tube?

16" and rifle length gas is a tricky combination.

The dwell time is iffy and you need the right gas port size.

Not really sure how the dwell time thing works but I bought the complete upper from Del-ton so I would assume that the gas port is the correct size.

Dwell time is the time it takes the bullet (and amount of time you have pressure in the gas system) to go from the gas port to the muzzle, the shorter the time the more likely you could have issues, especially with weaker/lower pressure ammo.

16" Rifle Length Gas Systems need larger gas ports than 20" barrels. They become more sensitive to dirt and environmental conditions than a 20" barrel.

If you carbine works with 5.56 ammo, and not .223 ammo, you need to tweak it.

What is the difference between a carbine and rifle buffer and spring?

Length is the difference, the rifle spring and buffer have to be used with a rifle tube and the same with the carbine.

Do not listen to the previous post.

Carbine length springs fit carbine length receiver extensions.

Isn't that what I just said? maybe I simplified it too much?

Yes it was, but we cross posted.

It happens.

ETA ...I was going to add that rifle buffer setups can used on carbine gas systems and vice versa but I didn't want the poor guys head to explode.

so would it be bad to put a carbine buffer spring in a rifle tube?

Without using a spacer to take up the space, yes it is rather bad.

Contact Del-Ton, and ask them what the gas port diameter is. It needs to be ~0.110".

i just talked to them and they said it is 0.098.

1) Ream the gas port larger
2) Use a lighter buffer
3) Use only 5.56mm Ammo

ADCO Firearms can ream the gas port for you for under $50.

This might sound krazy. What did Delton, say?

Or, you could send it to ADCO, and add good money to bad

What barrel length? Who made your barrel and do you know its gas port diameter?

Have you tried a standard carbine buffer?
