 Staked castle nut

Hey guys,

I'm looking to add a single point sling adapter and I cannot get the castle nut off. I can see it's staked in every notch of the nut (it's a Stag model 8 as I'm sure you could tell from my name). What can I do to, pardon my french, get it off?

Thanks,
Bill

I assume you have the proper tools? A vice, mag block or receiver block and stock wrench? Some say you can just bust through them with a bit of torque but if it were me, I'd either punch them back or even dremel them out.... Work smarter not harder

Just crank on your spanner wrench and it will break loose. The staked portions should be sheared or recede out of the way. The retainer will need to be replaced however.

Really no need to dremel anything. The stake will not stop the torque applied with the spanner wrench.

I've had mine one with stakes and loctite, too much force I swear I was gonna snap my receiver so I had to go about it a little different

This is why I never use locktite on that nut. When you do get it off you may have to replace it. Also, check the threads on the tube and the reciever to make sure they aren't marred once you do. I would suggest the dremel method as well if you cant get the proper toqque to just move the metal out of the way.

Why was it staked in all three notches? One is enough.

I used a Dremel and carefully cut the Castle nut off my Model 8. I then put on my sling plate and a new Castle nut.
