 The New AR-180 (c)?

Just wondering if anyone knows anything else about this alleged new model of the AR-180 that Armalite might be getting ready to release? I did a little searching but found old threads. I sure hope that it has a chrome lined barrel and folding stock...

Maybe we will hear about it during the shot show?

I don't see the market bearing it for awhile. The number of people who even know what an AR-180 is is small, let alone the purchasing power.

Then there's the split in the 180 community (which is AFAIK, here!) about what it should be. I.E. a 180 based SCAR (chrome barrel, all the bells and whistles, milled lower, 1:7 twist, and so on). Or if it should be closer to the first gen, with small nods to modernization I.E. Picatiny rail, and 1/9 twist barrel.

About the only thing that it seems that people agree on is it taking ar mags, ar triggers, and having a folding stock.

So they have to figure which half to market too, and hope there's enough sales to even come CLOSE to covering cost.

We're now 2-3 years out from looking into a new 180B as things have changed and other projects have taken priority. No decision has been made as to what our engineers we'll be looking to change so unfortunately I can't answer any questions yet.

Every five years I feel obligated to post my desire for an original type AR180 rifle made out of Aluminum & Steel

So here it is

I don't understand it... It's been years and years since they released the last version. People have made known what they want and I think it would sell very well if configured the right way. Oh well... I figure 2-3 years down the road could = never gonna happen and even if it does I probably won't want one then.

I had one 30 years ago made by Sterling. It was fun to shoot and was accurate.
The folding stock was certainly a unique feature for that day and time.
Selling it was a mistake.

People have made known what they want?

Yeah, and those wants run the entire gamut of what they could put in a rifle.

People say they want a chrome lined barrel like the original. The original did not have chrome lining.

People want a picitinnay rail.

Some people don't want that.

Some want a forged aluminum lower.

Some want a stamp steel lower.

Most of those who of us who actually own a 180B are just fine with a polymer lower.

So it's as not as simple as "people have known what they want". Yeah, it might be simple if everyone had stated the same "wants".

By your own admission, you won't want one, yet here you are bitching, just like a lot of others who really don't want one, they just like to bitch at ArmaLite.

At least you, unlike quite a few others, admit you don't want one.

Been a looooong time since I handled the one I had.....abducted in a divorce by aliens

Yep stamped steel....but I'd settle for an aluminum lower.....just don't want a polymer....stamped steel upper.....just wishful thinking...

But yep I would buy one in a heartbeat

At this point I'm tempted to go get some drawn steel square tubing, have the gun smith make a barrel trunnion and weld it in one end, slap it on a AR-15 lower and make my own AR-180X.

Come Get Some!

Do You Want To Dance?

I know that we are going have to wait. Along it does not comes out like how "Duke Nukem Forever" did in reality.

I really don't even want to respond to your post but since you made judgement and determined I'm bitching ill correct your ass clown comment. I stated something to the effect of, "I probably won't want one then". In that I want one NOW. 2-3 years down the road I might have the AR situation taken care of, I have none at this time as I am an AK fanatic. I have nothing against Armalite, period.

Have a great day. And if you want to call me a bitcher, do it in a PM where we can let our true opinions fly.

The rights to the AR-180 should be sold to an interested party. Armalite can leave it behind and move on.

Everyone and their brother stole the AR-180 design, I'm curious as to the patents on it.

I wonder what all they actually cover though, AR-180 derived stuff ended up TONS of rifle designs from the late 60's to the 90's, even now days.

What was that British abomination, the SA-80. I think it was made by Sterling, who had made some original AR180s for ArmaLite, and they did a very poor execution of the design.

By that I think you mean the SA80/L-85.

After familiarizing, I thought of the L-85 then what I think of the L-85A2now, namely the gas port is closer to the breech than I would like meaning that the unlock sequence begins earlier and at higher pressures than the AR-180.

Of the two L-85's I do prefer the A2 with its beefed up bolt and improved op-rod, gas piston, cylinder, regulator.
It is heavy for a 5.55 but it is built like a tank and a very good piece of kit.

ETA Sterling fumbled the ball with the first gen SA80 but the AR-180's they built are good to go.

Back on topic, perhaps the lower receiver could stamped out in two halves by a stamping house in Detroit ( God knows they have the expertise and need the work ) and the two sides machine welded together in Geneseo.

A limited partnership or market alliance could in theory be formed with a colleague company like Mantocore or Stormwerkz to produce the tacticool goodies that some people go for.

Such goodies could be offered as OEM/accessories or OEM "approved"

Two, three, ten years from now when the 180C or whatever hits the market I will be happy to have one with plain bluing or parkerizing, tool marks and rack grade welds.

Oh hell yeah, I love my Sterling built AR180.
